Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets are quickly approaching the start of the 2016 season. As the roster is finalized for the San Francisco Giants and their affiliates, we take a look at several highly touted prospects that could call Lake Olmstead Stadium home in 2016.
Among these players includes No. 3 ranked Giants prospect for 2016, 21-year-old pitcher Phil Bickford. Selected by the Giants in the first round of the 2015 draft, out of the College of Southern Nevada, Bickford spent 2015 playing for the Giants' Arizona League team. He appeared in 10 games, throwing 22.1 innings, striking out 32 batters and pitching to the tune of a 2.01 ERA.
Shortstop Lucious Fox, the Giants' forth ranked prospect, signed with the Giants in 2015 as an international free agent after moving back to his native Bahamas. Considered the best athlete of the 2015 international class, the 18-year-old boasts impressive speed, as well as the ability to switch-hit, and could potentially become a solid lead-off hitter.
Jalen Miller, a shortstop, is the 13th rated prospect in the Giants' Organization. The 19-year-old, drafted in the 3rd round of the 2015 draft out of Riverwood Highschool, played 44 games for the Arizona League Giants. He hit .218, 13 runs batted in, and recorded 38 hits.
Manuel Geraldo, a 19-year-old infielder out of the Dominican Republic, who can play shortstop and second base, spent the previous two seasons playing for the Giants' Dominican Summer League team. In 2015, he had a .328 batting average-up from .251 in 2014-hit three home runs, 37 RBI and stole 18 bases in 65 games.
Kevin Beltre, a 19-year-old who can play shortstop, second and third base, also comes out of the Dominican Republic. Beltre spent 2015 with the Arizona League Giants, playing in 14 games and hitting .239 with one home run.
Gustavo Cabrera, a 20-year-old centerfielder from Dominican Republic, only played two games in 2015 with the Arizona League team. He missed out on any baseball-related activities in 2014 due to a severe wrist injury. He played 54 games in 2013 in the Dominican Summer League, hitting .247, and two home runs with 22 RBI.
The final prospect to keep an eye on comes in the form of outfielder Jean Angomas. The 20-year-old Dominican native also played for the Arizona League Giants in 2015. Through 32 games, he hit .261 with one home run and seven RBI. Angomas has played all three outfield positions since joining the Giants' organization.
The GreenJackets kick off their 28th consecutive season of professional baseball in Augusta on Thursday, April 14th against the Charleston RiverDogs (NY Yankees).
