Nelson Propels JackHammers Past Goldeyes 7-3

WINNIPEG, MB, CANADA - Jon Nelson plated three late runs to push the JackHammers past the Goldeyes 7-3 Thursday afternoon in front of 5,105 at Canwest Park. The club returns to Joliet for the home opener tomorrow night against Lake County at 7:10 p.m.

The JackHammers (3-4) started the offense early, scoring three in the first. Jonathan Wyatt singled and Kevin Rios smacked his first double of the year. After Wyatt scored a passed ball, Brad Correll collected a double of his own to score Rios. Rafael Mendez plated the third run on a sacrifice fly to center for the 3-0 lead.

Winnipeg (5-3) rallied throughout the middle frames against Devin Anderson, scoring in the second, third and fifth innings. Brett Wallace hit a two out triple in the second scoring Vince Harrison from first. Dee Brown made it a 3-2 game in the third with his third double of the season, plating Kevin West.

The Goldeyes would tie it up at three in the fifth. Wes Long doubled to right centerfield and would score on a swinging bunt from Aharon Eggleston after Anderson threw the ball away. The southpaw would recover and strand two runners in the inning.

Joliet feasted off the bullpen late, with two runs in the seventh and ninth. Correll drove in his second run, and the game winning run, on a sacrifice fly off reliever Stephen Flake (0-1). Nelson knocked home the second run on a single to left field, his first RBI of the season.

Nelson was back it again in the ninth, launching a long two run home run over the wall in left to put the JackHammers up 7-3.

Anderson threw well for Joliet, allowing three runs on seven hits with five strikeouts. William Jackel (2-0) earned the win in relief, tossing 1.2 scoreless frames.

Chris Salamida went the first 6.1 and left with two runners on in the seventh. The lefty struck out six, but surrendered four runs on seven hits with two walks and two hit batters.

Rios and Nelson each had two hits with Nelson driving in a season high three runs. Correll knocked in two to push his team lead to seven.

The JackHammers end the seven game road trip at 3-4 and return to Silver Cross Field for the home opener Friday night. Ross Stout (0-1) gets the first home start opposite Jeff Long (0-1) for Lake County. First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. pre-game show on 1340 WJOL.

Loose Gravel - Freddie Thon singled in the third to extend his hitting streak to seven games - Griffin Bailey and Drew Shetrone went the final 2.1 innings for Joliet, allowing no runs on one hit with three strikeouts - Joliet has yet to play a game closer than four runs all year
