Flyers Drop Fifth in a Row
May 27, 2010 - Northern League (NL)
Schaumburg Flyers News Release
The Flyers (1-5) looked to LHP Todd Moser to play the role of stopper on a muggy Wednesday evening. Yet two Schaumburg errors led to a very different result, a 6-5 loss to Kansas City (5-1). The southpaw ended up allowing five runs in just four innings of work, but three were unearned. The Flyers started the scoring off with an RBI triple by Chris Schultz, the first three bagger for Schaumburg in 2010. That hit scored Travis Brown, who walked in his first plate appearance. It was the first time Brown had batted in the leadoff role this season. The T-Bones started their scoring off of Moser with two runs in the top of the third. An uncharacteristic Travis Brown error opened the door for Kansas City, leading to back-to-back RBI singles by hot-hitting Keanon Simon and Jake Blackwood.
It wasn't until the bottom of the fifth that the Flyers got back on the board. Brandon Newton created his own run by singling and advancing to second on an errant throw by Kansas City left fielder Brian Joynt to start the frame off. Newton then motored to third on a wild pitch that just barely got away from catcher Keith Hernandez. The third baseman came in to score on a Lyndon Poole groundout. In the sixth down 5-2, the Flyers again fought back with Chris Schultz's second triple of the night to lead off the inning. He scored immediately after on a Joe Nowicki double. Then Richard Mercado lofted a fly ball into right field for the sacrifice fly, allowing Nowicki to cross the plate. Matt Elliott came in to allow another run in the top of the eighth, making it 6-4 Kansas City. But the Flyers refused to go away. Joe Nowicki laced a double to left to begin the bottom half of the frame. The Schaumburg first baseman scored on a throwing error by Kansas City third baseman Rico Washington, who tried to erase Nowicki coming home. That run put the Flyers down by just one.
But that was it for Schaumburg as Justin James retired the side in the bottom of the ninth to earn his second save of the year. Tomorrow the Flyers start early with an 11 AM matinee. It's '90s day at Alexian Field and a perfect way to spend an early afternoon. Join Alex Perlman and Chris Lobosco for complete coverage on 1410 WRMN and flyersbaseball.com tomorrow morning.
