Negrych Named Topps Carolina League Player Of The Year

Lynchburg, VA* *- Former Hillcats infielder Jim Negrych was named the 2008 Carolina League Player of the Year on Wednesday by Topps Company of New York, in conjunction with Minor League Baseball. The annual George M. Trautman Awards are presented in each of the 16 domestic Minor Leagues.

Negrych, who was a sixth round pick in the First-Year Player Draft in 2006, was both a mid and post-season All-Star selection in the CL this past season. Before his promotion to Double-A Altoona on July 29th, he was leading the league in batting average (.370), hits (143), doubles (36), runs (77) and on-base percentage (.448). The left-handed hitter also was fifth in slugging percentage (.508) and extra-base hits (42). He also swatted five home runs and drove-in 62 runs.

The former Pittsburgh Panther was named Topps Carolina League Player of the month for the month of July when he batted .402 with 12 doubles, three homers, 20 RBI, and 17 runs scored. He was the first player drafted out of the University of Pittsburgh by the Pirates since Ken Macha in 1972. After his promotion to Altoona, Negrych batted .310 with 10 RBI in 25 games with the Curve.
