After an explosive first quarter for the Nebraska Danger, the Bemidji Axemen fought back but came up short with a score of 74-55.
The Danger wasted no time jumping on the Axemen Friday night as Jameel Sewell hit Troy Evans early for an 11-yard touchdown. The Danger then showed why they have the number one defense in the IFL as Darnell Terrell recovered a fumble which the Danger converted into six points less than a minute later on a 10-yard run by Waymon James. A rouge point and a safety off a blocked field goal gave the Danger three more points. The quarter ended with the Danger leading 24-0 after a Jameel Sewell pass to Kayne Farquharson. Sewell finished the first quarter 5 for 5 passing with 54 yards and two touchdowns.
"We hit our stride early finding open receivers and taking advantage of some mistakes they made," Head Coach Mike Davis said.
The second quarter however was not quite as one-sided. The Danger defense was gashed for 115 yards and four touchdowns as the Axemen cut the lead down to 14 points at the half. All four touchdowns came from the arm of Dante Perez who finished the half 12-20 and 106 yards. The Danger scoring blitz was not completely shut down. Jameel Sewell found both Jasonus Tillery and Troy Evans in the second quarter for two touchdowns. Brendan Hanaphy ended the half for the Danger as he punched through a 43-yard field goal as the teams headed to the locker room with the Danger ahead 41-27.
"We let off the gas a little in the second quarter which was really frustrating since we did so well in the first quarter," Davis said.
The Axemen started off the second half moving the ball down the field scoring on a one-yard rush from Malku Kalokoh. The Danger responded with a 40-yard field goal from Brendan Hanaphy giving them a 10 point lead 44-34. A sack set up a fourth down field goal attempt by the Axemen when Aronde Stanton got a hand up and blocked the kick, giving the Danger the ball at the one-yard line. A six yard pass from Jameel Sewell to Kayne Farquharson gave the Danger back a 17-point lead with 6:14 left in the third quarter. On the ensuing possession by the Axemen an errant pass by Dante Perez went straight to the Danger's Isaiah Scott who intercepted the ball and returned it 35yards for a touchdown extending their lead to 24 points 58-24.Jameel Sewell showed off his athletic ability as he side armed a pass to Troy Evans with 26 seconds left in the third quarter who bobbled the ball before dragging two defenders into the end zone for a touchdown. The third quarter ended with the Danger defense getting a safety making the lead 26 points 67-41.
"The third quarter was huge after letting up a bit at the end of the first half, we talked at halftime and knew we had to come back out with some fire. Give Jameel and Isaiah and all the guys a lot of credit, they came out and really took this game over in the second half," Davis said.
After each team failed to convert their first possession of the fourth quarter into any points, the Danger made a big play as Malcolm Williams recovered a fumble and was down by contact at the six-yard line. The Bemidji defense stiffened up but couldn't keep Sewell out of the end zone as he used a quarterback sneak to get a three-yard touchdown with 9:52 left in the game. Sewell finished the night 13-24 for 120 yards and six touchdowns passing, he was also the rushing leader running nine times for 71 yards. The Axemen did not go away though, scoring a touchdown and making a two-point conversion with 5:56 left in the game cutting the lead to 25 for the Danger 74-49. Another touchdown by Bemidji with 18 seconds left would be the last of night making the final score 74-55.
The Danger next play Saturday, May 2nd versus the Billings Wolves at the Heartland Event Center.
