NC Courage Defeats UNC-Chapel Hill 2-0 in First Preseason Test

Cary, NC - The North Carolina Courage opened up preseason with a 2-0 victory over UNC-Chapel Hill Sunday afternoon thanks to a brace from Darian Jenkins. Goalkeepers Sabrina D'Angelo and Katelyn Rowland split time to earn the shutout against the Tar Heels while Meredith Speck and Debinha each provided an assist.

Jenkins returns to the Courage from last season, but is seeing her first professional preseason minutes as she was out for the entirety of 2017 due to an ankle injury. Jenkins was drafted eighth overall by the Courage from UCLA in the 2017 NWSL College Draft.

"Solid start to 2018," said NC Courage head coach Paul Riley. "Obviously we came in with some heavy legs, but I was happy with the effort and the desire. Preseason games against top college programs like UNC certainly helps us develop full match fitness. Today was an excellent challenge, and we got to see a few glimpses of how our 2018 version of the Courage will look like. We now have a baseline and foundation to work from and the players walk away with a bit of confidence and looking forward to their much deserved day off."

The NC Courage returns to preseason action on Thursday, March 1 as they take on NC State at Dail Soccer Stadium in Raleigh, NC.

The NC Courage will open their highly-anticipated sophomore season at home in an NWSL Championship rematch against the Portland Thorns in the NWSL Game of the Week on Lifetime.
