NBA G League Recognizes Wisconsin Herd for Best Record in Eastern Conference
OSHKOSH, Wis - The NBA G League announced today that the Wisconsin Herd, the NBA G League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks, have been recognized for completing the 2019-20 regular season with the best record in the Eastern Conference.
"As a coach, I couldn't be prouder of our team and the organizational success," said Wisconsin Herd Head Coach Chase Buford. "Being recognized by the league for having the best record in the Eastern Conference validates the hard work, effort and commitment that our group displayed all year long."
The Herd, who finished the 2018-19 campaign with a 12-38 record, capped off its third G League season with a 33-10 record, which served as the league's top mark. During the 2019-20 season, Wisconsin was one of two teams (Salt Lake City Stars) to win 30 games or more. The Herd became just the second team in G League history to go from worst to first in consecutive seasons, joining the 2003 Columbus Riverdragons. In addition, the 21-win increase from one season to the next marked the single largest increase in victories in league history, surpassing the Westchester Knicks who went from 10 to 28 from 2014-16.
Through March 12 - when the G League postponed its season - the Herd led the league in rebounds (52.5) and opponent field goal percentage (42.9%), while posting the second-highest scoring average (120.9). Of the 28 G League clubs, the Herd was the lone team to finish in the top-five in both scoring average and opponent field goal percentage. In addition, Wisconsin won 15 games by double figures and joined the 2014-15 Rio Grande Valley Vipers as the only teams in league history to average 120 points and 50 rebounds in the same season.
In conjunction with team success, the Herd garnered several individual awards and accolades. During the 2019 NBA G League Showcase in December, Rayjon Tucker signed with the Utah Jazz and became the fourth Wisconsin Herd player to make the jump from the G League to the NBA.
Regarding weekly and monthly player awards, Dragan Bender and Jaylen Adams collected Player of the Week honors, while Frank Mason III, Tucker and Adams became the first trio of teammates in G League history to earn the Player of the Month award in three consecutive months. Mason, Tucker and Adams were also named to the Eastern Conference Midseason All-NBA G League Team, while Adams represented the Herd as a member of the 2020 USA AmeriCup Qualifying Team.
After leading his team to a league-best 8-2 record, Head Coach Chase Buford was named NBA G League Coach of the Month for January and stands as the lone head coach in franchise history to earn Coach of the Month honors.
Following the conclusion of the season, Mason was named the 2019-20 NBA G League Most Valuable Player, while Adams finished second in the MVP voting. Additionally, Mason and Adams were named to the All-NBA G League First Team and Jemerrio Jones was selected to the All-NBA G League Third Team.
In honor of the achievement, the G League will donate $10,000 to the Milwaukee Urban League, which was the community organization selected by the Herd.
