Published on April 9, 2010 under NBA G League (G League) News Release
NEW YORK, April 9, 2010 - The NBA Development League, the official minor league of the National Basketball Association, will hold its annual National Tryout less than 10 minutes from Washington Dulles International Airport at Hoop Magic in Chantilly, Va., from June 11-13. The three-day camp challenges the 200 NBA D-League hopefuls with individual skill-based drills and four full-court games, two on Saturday and two on Sunday. The Tryout enables participants to showcase their skills for NBA D-League player personnel executives, coaches and industry scouts with the hopes of gaining eligibility for the NBA D-League Draft in November.
"The NBA D-League's National Tryout gives talented young prospects a unique opportunity to demonstrate their abilities to team and league officials," said Chris Alpert, Vice President of NBA D-League Basketball Operations and Player Personnel. "And while it provides athletes a chance to showcase their games, it also allows our teams to evaluate top-notch talent in a highly competitive environment."
Following last year's event in Los Angeles, 31 players signed NBA D-League contracts with eight of those players being selected in the 2009-10 NBA D-League Draft. In total, five players from the 2009 Tryout spent time on NBA D-League rosters during the 2009-10 season. Headlining that group are Chris Ayer, who played for both the Springfield Armor and Utah Flash, and Jimmie Binnie, who was drafted by and played for the Dakota Wizards.
Ayer, a 6-10 center from Loyola Marymount appeared in 16 games, one start, for the Armor and Flash, averaging 5.2 points and 2.7 rebounds, scoring in double figures in three games. He scored a season high 13 points in a 132-96 loss at Bakersfield on March 13.
Binnie, a 6-7 forward from Dayton, appeared in 18 games for the Wizards during the 2009-10 NBA D-League season, averaging 6.2 points and 1.7 rebounds in 14.7 minutes. He scored in double figures three times, including a season-high 18 points in a 117-114 road win over the Idaho Stampede on Dec. 2, 2009.
Ten players who participated in the 2008 event in Suwanee, Ga. earned NBA D-League roster spots during 2008-09, including Utah key contributors Bennett Davis and Carlos Wheeler, now both in their second year with the team.
Players wishing to participate in this year's camp must be at least 18 years old and meet NBA D-League eligibility requirements. The application for the camp, player release and eligibility forms can be downloaded from the league's official website at http://www.nba.com/dleague/2010_open_tryout.html. Those completed forms along with a $600 money order need to be received by the League office by May 22, 2010. The participation fee includes lodging for two nights, transportation between the hotel and gymnasium, breakfast each day and a uniform. All materials must be received by the deadline and completed in their entirety for the player to be considered for participation in the National Tryout. The National Tryout will be limited to 200 participants.
