NBA D-League Update
March 28, 2014 - NBA G League (G League) News Release
NUNNALLY PLAYING FOR KEEPS
Jon Bon Jovi ain't got nothing on James Nunnally.
It's all the same, only the names will change ... Sometimes I sleep, sometimes it's not for days, and the people I meet always go their separate ways ... I play for keeps, 'cause I might not make it back
Such has been the way of things for Nunnally since going undrafted out of UC Santa Barbara in 2012. First came NBA Summer League with Sacramento Kings in 2012. Next it was off to Greece, before returning a few months later to sign on with the Bakersfield Jam of the NBA D-League. This past summer, he played for the Miami Heat. From there, he signed with the Phoenix Suns, but was waived in training camp, returning to Bakersfield.
The first big break came on Jan. 11, 2014, when after a strong showing at the NBA D-League Showcase, Nunnally inked a 10-day contract with the Atlanta Hawks. Another one followed, but he wasn't kept on for the remainder of the season, so it was again back to Bakersfield, who then traded him to the Texas Legends.
The next big break came on March 17, when he signed a 10-day contract with the Philadelphia 76ers. He signed for another 10 days yesterday, and is hoping that leads to a rest-of-season deal, and perhaps more going forward.
"It means they're looking at me, watching me," Nunnally told Comcast Sportsnet. "I just have to come out and play more aggressive. Be myself and play within myself. I'm really blessed to be in the NBA. I'll play anywhere on any team. I know it's a rebuilding year for this team. They're looking for guys to build with in the future. I just got to play."
Nunnally has averaged 2.3 points in 13.3 minutes over six games for Philadelphia. In 35 games split between Bakersfield and Texas this season, Nunnally averaged 18.1 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists, while shooting 47 percent from the field and 41 percent from distance. He's hoping to find a niche with his ability to shoot from the perimeter.
Even if the Sixers decide not to keep him after another 10 days, in just two short years, Nunnally has gone from obscure college senior who didn't get an invite to the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament in 2012, to earning an NBA level paycheck for 40 days. Another strong showing this summer, and his NBA stay could be a lot longer next season.
