LYNN, Mass. - After scoring 13 runs against the Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide the night before, the Worcester Bravehearts struggled to muster up runs in a 6-3 loss to the North Shore Navigators on June 29 at Fraser Field in Lynn, Mass.
North Shore starter Matt Rodriguez got his second consecutive start against the Bravehearts and like June 24 pitched six innings and set his team up for a win. Rodriguez gave up only one run on four hits and struck out three for his first win of the season.
Worcester starter Evan Devico threw 4.1 innings and similar to Rodriguez only ceded one run on four hits. But Devico did not factor in the decision, as the game was tied 1-1 when he left the game in the fifth inning.
The teams traded runs in the third inning, as the Bravehearts took a 1-0 lead after Darian Ramage hit a triple, and infielder Dylan Harris knocked him in with an RBI single. Harris and Ramage have recorded a hit in eight of their last 10 games. Ramage is ranked fourth in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League with a .368 batting average, and Harris is currently on a four-game hitting streak.
But North Shore took the lead in the sixth inning when second baseman Omar Cuevas hit a sacrifice fly off Bravehearts reliever and Worcester, Mass., native David Montiverdi that scored catcher Alex Burridge for the go-ahead run. Montiverdi took the loss, which drops him to 0-1 this season.
Cuevas continued to torch the Bravehearts' pitching staff, as he knocked in two key insurance runs on a bases-loaded double off Worcester pitcher Tyrone Miller. The Navigators padded on two more runs to take a 6-1 lead into the ninth inning.
The Bravehearts staged a brief rally off Navigators reliever Mike Weisman with an RBI groundout by designated hitter Nick Nunziato and an RBI single by outfielder Jordan Berry, but Weisman retired the rest of the side to clinch the victory for North Shore.
The 16-7 Worcester Bravehearts enjoy a day off before hosting the Martha's Vineyard Sharks at 7:05 p.m. July 1 at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.
