Navarro Belts Walk-Off Grand Slam as Sox Take Down Dash in 10
July 16, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Salem Red Sox News Release
Salem, VA (July 16, 2009)- With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the tenth, Yamaico Navarro delivered the first real offensive fireworks of the night. On a 2-1 pitch, the Red Sox shortstop crushed a deep fly that cleared the left field wall and sent the Red Sox dugout rushing on the field in celebration as Salem defeated Winston-Salem 5-1 on Thursday evening to take two out of three from the Dash. Navarro's grand slam off Hector Santiago was the first granny of the season for the Salem Red Sox, stamping an exclamation point to the series and the homestand at Lewis-Gale Field.
Navarro finished 2-5 with all five Red Sox RBI, for it was his two-out double in the bottom of the sixth inning off Justin Edwards that scored Che-Hsuan Lin from second-base to tie the game at one. It came in response to Jimmy Gallagher's RBI single in the top half of the sixth off Stephen Fife that plated the first and only run of the game for the Dash. Aside from those two run-scoring connections and the winning dinger in the tenth, the series finale was completely dominated by the pitchers.
Fife excelled in his Salem debut by only allowing one run on six hits in six very strong innings. He finished with five strikeouts and no walks, and at one point, Fife retired 11 in a row and 15 out of 16. In relief, Dave McKae threw two scoreless innings in his first appearance since June 6, while Robert Coello earned the win with a pair of shutout frames as well. Coello improved to 4-2 and lowered his ERA to 1.80.
Edwards pitched well enough to win for Winston, but received a no-decision after holding the Sox to just one run over a season-high eight innings. The lefthander was economical throughout, retiring the Red Sox on six pitches in the fourth and on just four pitches in the seventh. Edwards totaled four strikeouts and no walks, yielding six hits over his eight frames. Santiago suffered the loss, falling to 2-4 on the year after surrendering the walk-off slam.
Although Navarro was the hero offensively, Lin also carried the offense with four of Salem's ten hits. Lin finished 4-5 with a double and scored twice. Daniel Nava also finished with multiple hits for the Sox, going 2-4 while also dropping a successful sacrifice bunt in the sixth inning that paved the way for the Sox' first run.
The Red Sox now hit the road for a three-game trip to their nearby rivals in Lynchburg. City Stadium will host the weekend set beginning on Friday evening at 7:05, when Eammon Portice opposes Jeff Locke in the opener. The Red Sox swept a brief two-game set in Lynchburg by a combined score of 18-8 on June 30 and July 1 in the last meetings between the two teams.
