SURPRISE, AZ. - The Birmingham Barons defeated the Northwest Arkansas Naturals 4-0 in a Spring Training game on Tuesday afternoon. The Barons are the Double-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox and play in the Southern League.
Outfielder Chris Elder went two-for-three for the Naturals. Elder played in 48 games for Rookie-Advanced Burlington, Class-A Kane County and Class-A Advanced Wilmington last season, batting .250 with 38 hits and 22 RBI.
Jamie Richmond and Andrew Triggs each pitched scoreless innings. Richmond, who signed with the Royals this winter after spending 2012 in the Can-Am and Frontier independent leagues, issued one walk and struck out all three batters he faced. Triggs didn't give up a hit or walk in his outing. In 22 appearances last season with Rookie-Advanced Idaho Falls and Class-A Kane County, Triggs went 1-1 with four saves in 46 innings. Triggs struck out 51 batters while issuing 10 walks.
