MYRTLE BEACH, SC- With the heat index reaching triple digits on Wednesday afternoons the Potomac Nationals pitchers cooled off the Myrtle Beach Pelicans bats and shut out the Birds, 2-0, in the rubber game of the three game series. Last night the Pelicans offense lit up the scoreboard early and often, tonight they were unable to plate a run and notched just five hits against the P-Nats, who won the series two games to one.
Potomac manufactured the first run of the night in the top of the 2nd inning. After 1B Josh Whitesell singled and stole second base, LF Doc Brooks delivered a two-out base hit to right field, scoring Whitesell to give the Nationals an early 1-0 lead.
The visitor's struck again in the top of the 6th. With two outs, 3B Kory Casto drew a walk and stole second to get into scoring position. Casto would later come in to score on an RBI double courtesy of Whitesell to extend the P-Nats lead to 2-0.
Myrtle Beach starter Chris Waters (L, 3-1) pitched well, but didn't receive any run support and was charged with the loss. Waters allowed both Nationals runs on five hits and struck out three on the night. Reliever Seth Bobbitt pitched two scoreless innings out of the pen. Potomac starter Mayque Quintero (W, 2-2) took home the win after tossing five shut out innings that saw him give up just two hits. Closer Devin Perrin (S, 1) earned his first save of the year with a scoreless final two frames.
Offensively Myrtle Beach was paced by the two hit effort of DH Steven Doetsch, who went 2-4 and extended his hitting streak to seven straight games. The Pelicans also got hits from CF Carl Loadenthal, SS Jaime Trejo, and C Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Saltalamacchia has now hit safely in 12 of his last 13 games, including six straight.
