STATEN ISLAND, NY --- The Vermont Expos walked their way to a 7-2 victory on Wednesday afternoon and a series win over the New York-Penn League-leading Staten Island Yankees at the Richmond County Ballpark at St. George.

Yankee starter Garrett Patterson (0-1) walked the first five Vermont batters of the game as the Expos scored six runs on just one hit in the first inning. Jose Contreras, Francisco Plasencia and John-Michael Howell walked consecutively and Contreras scored the games first run on a wild pitch.

After another walk to Dee Brown reloaded the bases, Rolando Arnedo walked to force home Plasencia for a 2-0 lead. Patterson was relieved by Hairo Solis, who promptly walked Drew McMillan for the sixth straight base on balls to open the game and a 3-0 Expos lead. A passed ball plated Vermont's fourth run before the Yankees recorded an out with a strikeout of Lorvin Louisa.

Brandon Conway, the Expos eighth batter of the inning, finally put a ball in play with a sacrifice fly to centerfield and Andy Lane followed with an RBI single for Vermont's only hit of the inning and sixth run.

Vermont starter Chris Lugo (1-0) gave up a leadoff double and run in the first inning, but finished his outing with two runs allowed (one earned) on five hits over five innings for his first win with the Expos. Marco Estrada allowed one hit and struckout three in four scoreless innings of relief for his first save.

Brown was 2-for-4 with a double and Lane added two hits for Vermont, which scored its other run of the game in the fifth inning on a Staten Island error. The Expos had other chances to score in the game, but Vermont finished 2-for-16 with runners in scoring position.

Wednesday's win was the first time in 12 opportunities this season that Vermont has won the final game of a series that they played. The Expos won two of three games in the three-game series with Staten Island (22-12), which currently has the NY-Penn League's best record.

Vermont (10-26) return home to Centennial Field to begin a six-game homestand on Thursday night with the first of a three-game series against the Lowell Spinners (Boston Red Sox affiliate). The Expos will play Lowell through Saturday and then host the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (Cleveland Indians affiliate) Sunday through Tuesday.
