Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums have announced the activation of RHP David Nathanson, the Frontier League's ERA leader, from the injured reserve list.
Nathanson was placed on injured reserve with a back injury on August 3 after a start in Evansville where he threw six innings and allowed two runs on eight hits with no walks and a pair of strikeouts. He missed a start on July 23 with a back injury suffered while running. He returned on July 28, throwing a career high nine innings in a no-decision against the Midwest Sliders, but the injury flared up again at Evansville.
Nathanson has recorded no decisions in his last two starts, the first two no decisions of the season. He was the lone unanimous choice to the Frontier League's East Division All-Star team and currently leads the league with a 2.05 ERA in 92 innings of work. He is also tied for third in the league with nine wins on the season.
Nathanson has made 13 starts this season for the Beach Bums, posting quality starts of six innings or more with less than three runs allowed in 11 of those appearances. He has walked only 18 hitters and allowed just 80 hits while limiting opponents to a .237 average. During the month of July, Nathanson made four starts and posted a 2-1 record to go with a 1.52 ERA.
Nathanson has 57 strikeouts, tied for the team lead with Brett Bostelman and Ryan Gehring. He struck out a career high seven in his third start of the season at Rockford on June 3, and also started on July 4 in front of the largest crowd of the season at Wuerfel Park, throwing seven shutout innings, allowing six hits and striking out four. A second year member of the Beach Bums, Nathanson was 5-2 in 2007 with a 2.95 ERA.
Nathanson will rejoin the starting rotation, possibly making a start as soon as tomorrow night against the River City Rascals. His activation puts the roster at the league maximum of 24.
The Beach Bums (43-38) currently hold the fourth and final Frontier League playoff slot with 15 games to play. Traverse City opens a nine-game homestand with the River City Rascals at Wuerfel Park tomorrow night in a 7:05pm game. The first 500 fans through the gates will receive a Beach Bums Baseball Academy logo baseball. River City will send All-Star LHP Scott Fogelson (4-8, 5.46) to the mound while the Beach Bums have yet to announce a starter.
