Wheeling Nailers News Release

WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, are excited to announce their seventh player signing of the 2016 offseason. Wheeling has signed forward Nick Sorkin to an ECHL contract.

Sorkin, 25, returns to North America, after venturing over to Sweden for the 2015-16. There, he was a member of Vasteras IK, as he finished third on the team with 15 goals, while ending up sixth on the club with 24 points. Nick's most recent experience on this side of the Atlantic Ocean came during the 2014-15 campaign, when he played for one of Wheeling's affiliates at the time, the AHL's Hamilton Bulldogs. As a rookie, the Rockville, Maryland native accumulated 11 goals, 14 assists, and 25 points, while appearing in 68 games. Sorkin got his first taste of the professional level at the end of the 2013-14 season, when he scored one goal in nine contests with Hamilton.

"Nick Sorkin comes to us with AHL experience, and is a player who is looking to reestablish himself in North America, after playing in Sweden last year," said Nailers Head Coach Jeff Christian. "He is an offensive guy, who can be a top point producer at this level. Between North America and Europe, this will be Nick's third full season as a pro."

Prior to turning pro, Nick played four years of college hockey at the University of New Hampshire, where he majored in Finance, while skating with the Wildcats. After tallying five, 35, and 17 points respectively in his first three seasons at UNH, Sorkin exploded as a senior, racking up 20 goals, 21 assists, and 41 points in 41 games. The 20 goals were the most on the squad, while his 41 points ranked second. The Wildcats reached the NCAA Tournament in 2011 and 2013, falling one win short of the Frozen Four on both occasions. For three years, Nick was teammates with Casey DeSmith and Jeff Wyer, who have both spent time with the Nailers.

Nick Sorkin and the Nailers will begin the 2015-16 season on October 15th, when they host the Brampton Beast at 7:05.
