Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV - The Wheeling Nailers, the "AA" affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers, announced today the signing of forward Brendan Cook for the 2007-08 season.
The 24-year-old forward played on three different ECHL teams during the 2006-07 season. He began the year by playing 10 games with the Pensacola Ice Pilots before being dealt to Utah for 40 and ultimately Columbia for the final 12.
"It was definitely a challenging year for myself," said Cook. "All in all it was a good learning experience for me. I definitely feel like I had a chance to deal with some adversity and I think that I will be a better player because of it."
When all was said and done, Cook had scored 16 goals and 16 assists for 32 points in his second professional season. He notched 42 points (20g, 22a) in his rookie year with Pensacola.
"I am certainly excited about the opportunity with a new team and hopefully be a contributor to a lot of wins and a playoff team," added Cook.
Cook's rights were acquired by Wheeling at season's end from the Columbia Inferno to complete the three-way deal that sent goalie Danny Taylor to the Texas Wildcatters in March.
"Brendan is definitely someone we had an eye on when we made that trade," said Nailers' Head Coach Glenn Patrick. "He is a goal-scorer and will provide a nice compliment to our offense."
The 5-9, 185-pound native of Reston, Manitoba played his collegiate hockey at Bemidji State University from 2001-05. Cook set BSU's Division I-era single-season scoring mark with 40 points (20g, 20a) as a senior in 2004-05, and finished his career with 102 points (55g, 47a) to rank second amongst BSU's Division I-era scorers. He also set BSU's career Division I-era record with 22 power-play goals.
The Nailers, AA affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers, will open the 20th Anniversary season with a game against the Johnstown Chiefs on Oct. 18th. It will be a rematch of Game 7 from the first-ever ECHL Finals. Wheeling will open their home schedule on Oct. 26 against the South Carolina Stingrays.
