ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Defenseman Corbin Schmidt has agreed to a third consecutive year in an Aces uniform, signing a one-year contract for the 2007-08 season.
Schmidt, a member of the 2006 Kelly Cup champions as a rookie, surpassed his first-year totals in all three major categories, finishing with nine goals and 25 assists in 68 games while posting a solid +15 rating, including a league-best +12 in January. He did not appear in the 2006 postseason but contributed a goal and four assists in Alaska's run to the 2007 conference finals, its third consecutive appearance among the ECHL's Final Four.
Schmidt, who will turn 27 in September, grew up in Anchorage and attended East High School, winning a state title with the Thunderbirds in 1997. A versatile 5-11, 190-pounder, he has played forward at times during his two years with the Aces as well as during a four-year stint at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, where in 2005, he helped lead the Nanooks to the school's first-ever top three finish at the CCHA Tournament. Schmidt earned CCHA All-Academic recognition twice in four years at UAF and graduated with a degree in psychology.
The Aces and their head coach, Keith McCambridge, are in the midst of running a one-week hockey camp at Ben Boeke Arena for children who might otherwise not have a similar opportunity.
