Nailers Re-Sign Andrew Ammon

August 26, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release

WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, are excited to announce their ninth player signing of the 2016 offseason. Wheeling has re-signed forward Andrew Ammon to an ECHL contract.

Ammon, 26, started last season as a member of the Reading Royals for six games, before the Nailers signed him to a new contract in the middle of February. Andrew had success almost immediately with his new club, as he had the lead assist on the first goal in his first game, setting up Andrew Cerretani against the Adirondack Thunder. Two games later, Wheeling returned to Glens Falls Civic Center, and the Anchorage, Alaska native stepped up, breaking a 0-0 tie in the third period of what turned out to be a 4-0 triumph. Ammon lit the lamp again the following evening in a 3-2 victory at Elmira. Due to an unfortunate injury, Andrew missed 18 straight games, limiting his Nailers totals to five points in nine games. However, he returned for the start of the playoffs, and scored in the first period of game one against the Florida Everblades, en route to a four-point postseason.

"Once he found his stride, Andrew Ammon is player who really performed well for us, establishing himself in the lineup," said Nailers Head Coach Jeff Christian. "He does well using his speed, while also being able play a physical game, agitating the opposition. In addition, he possesses a great wrist shot, which gives him a lot of offensive upside."

Last year was Ammon's second season of professional hockey, as he spent the majority of the 2014-15 campaign with the South Carolina Stingrays, who similar to Wheeling, won the Eastern Conference Championship. Andrew accumulated seven goals and 11 points in 38 contests, while chipping in with one goal in four games with the AHL's Providence Bruins. Prior to turning pro, the forward played four seasons of college hockey at Princeton University. Ammon amassed 33 goals, 28 assists, and 61 points in 107 games with the Tigers, and was teammates with former Nailer and current Montreal Canadien Mike Condon for three years.

"Last year was an amazing journey to be a part of - the way everyone came together, from the team, to the fans, to the community, it was lots of fun," Ammon said. "Right now, I feel healthier than I've ever been, and I am looking forward to a fresh start, while helping the team continue its winning ways."

Andrew Ammon and the Eastern Conference Champion Wheeling Nailers will begin the 2015-16 season on October 15th, when they play host to the Brampton Beast at 7:05.
