
Mystics select point guard Temeka Johnson

Washington, D.C. - The Washington Mystics today selected point guard Temeka Johnson with the sixth overall pick in the 2005 WNBA Draft.
"We are excited to be able to add Temeka to our roster," said Washington Mystics General Manager Linda Hargrove. "She is the consummate point guard and a good leader. She sees the floor well and can hit the open shot."
Johnson, a 5-3 player from Louisiana State University averaged 11.1 ppg, 7.3 spg and 4.0 rpg during her collegiate career. She received All-American honorable mention in 2002, 2003, 2004 and was named to the All-SEC first team in 2004 and 2005. Johnson led the Lady Tigers to consecutive Final Four appearances in 2004 and 2005. During the 2003-04 season, Johnson set new records at LSU in total assists (945), season assist record (289) and assists per game (15).
With the 19th overall pick, Washington selected Erica Taylor. A 5-10 guard from Louisiana Tech University, Taylor was named to the WAC All-defensive team in 2003 and 2004 as well as the WAC All-tournament team in 2004. She averaged 11.1 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 2.75 asp and 2.2 spg.
"Erica is a strong offensive-minded player. She can shoot the three and is very good at anticipating passes" added Hargrove.
In the third round (32nd overall), the Mystics selected 5-11 forward Tashia Moorehead from the University of Florida. She averaged 10.7 ppg and 4.8 rpg in her two years with the Lady Gators. Prior to transferring to Florida, Moorehead was named the MVP of the 2003 National Junior College Athletic Association Championship Tournament while attending Gulf Coast Community College.

The 2005 Mystics season kicks off on Saturday, May 21st at 7:00 p.m. when the team travels to Charlotte to take on the Sting. Washington will have its home opener on Sunday, May 22nd at 6:00 p.m. versus Eastern Conference Champions Connecticut Sun.
