North Adams SteepleCats News Release
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - With the score even at 3-3 I the top of the seventh, Mystic connected for two hits and executed a double steal to tally the game-deciding run before holding on late, as North Adams dropped its fifth consecutive match, 5-3, against the Schooners in an NECBL cross-divisional showdown on Friday night at Joe Wolfe Field.
After tying the game with a run in the bottom of the fourth, the SteepleCats (4-8) would go quiet on offense the rest of the way, while the Schooners (7-3) pounded out 13 hits against the North Adams pitching staff and executed in key spots to grab a road win.
Southpaw sophomore Scott Squier (Hawaii) - who had struck out 15 over 13 scoreless innings previously - was tagged for his first loss of the year to move to 1-1. The Phoenix, Ariz., native let up four earned runs on 12 hits while fanning six and walking one. Anthony Galan kept the game tied in a starting role for Mystic before Pat Egan won it out of the bullpen, offering 2 2/3 frames of one-hit, scoreless baseball.
The SteepleCat offense saw just sophomore Daniel Bick (Georgia College) finish with multiple hits, while both Nicholas Darras and Matt O'Herron went 3-for-4 for the visitors, who also saw a two-hit performance from Garrett Kennedy.
Both sides scored early and often through the first four innings. Mystic struck first with a bases-loaded opportunity in the top of the first, only to be answered by a two-spot from the 'Cats in the last of the second. Bick and freshman Jacob Huckabay (UT-Pan American) drove in both runs to push North Adams up, 2-1.
But the Schooners immediately responded with a two-spot of their own, getting to Squier in the third thanks to a single and a run-scoring error after loading the bases with just one out. North Adams, again, came back to tie it in the fourth, as freshman Kyle Richardson (Notre Dame) doubled down the left field line to bring home Bick and tie the match at 3-3.
Neither side would push a run across over the ensuing three innings before threatening against Squire again in the seventh. With two outs, Darras reached by means of a hit by pitch, and after a stolen base and a single moved him to third, the Schooners executed a double steal that paid off, as Darras tallied the game-deciding run in the process.
The Schooners would get more insurance tally in the eighth to settle for the final margin of victory, as North Adams finished 2-for-9 with men in scoring position.
The SteepleCats hit the road for a three-game stretch away from the Berkshires starting with a Saturday (June 22) bout at Holyoke. First pitch from MacKenzie Stadium is set for 6:35 p.m.
