Danbury Bullpen Silences Swamp Bats' Hitters, Keene Loses 9-5 Falls To 2-8

June 21, 2013 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Keene Swamp Bats News Release

Keene got things going early in the game as Dylan Moore drove a pitch over the wall in leftfield for the leadoff home run, his first of the season to the Swamp Bats the early 1-0 lead.

Danbury responded with three of their own in the bottom of the inning off of Swamp Bats starter Joe McCarthy of Southern New Hampshire. The big hit in the inning was a two-run double by Westerner centerfielder Daniel Spingola.

After Louisville's Zach Lucas reached on a single it was Tommy Monnot who came up and cranked a pitch into left center and it sailed over the fence for a two-run home run. Monnot was a late addition to the lineup as starter Steve Swingle was scratched before first pitch.

In the bottom of the third inning Keene was able to scratch across two more runs, as JP Sportman scored on a fielder's choice and an error on the shortstop Chris Riopedre allowed Eric Gutierrez to come in to give the Swamp Bats a 5-3 lead.

Danbury took the lead in the bottom on the third with three runs after Riopedre atoned for his error and picked up a base knock that drove in two Westerner runners. Danbury was able to chase McCarthy out of the game as he was unable to get a batter out in the inning.

Danbury made a call to the bullpen in the fourth and brought in their righty Zach Tax who was able to hold the Swamp Bats lineup in check. Tax went 4.1 innings, only giving up one hit and not allowing a run.

Riley Palmer drilled a deep two-run home run to right field off of new Swamp Bats pitcher James Connell. That allowed Danbury to stretch the lead to 9-5.

JP Sportman finished 0-3 on the night, ending his seven-game hitting streak. The bullpen for Danbury pitched outstanding going six innings allowing just one Swamp Bat hit, a Zach Lauricella single in the fifth.

Keene is back on the road on Saturday, as they will travel to Vermont to take on the Mountaineers for their first meeting of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
