Ocean State Waves News Release
GROTON, Conn. - Left-hander Mike Eckerle allowed just two hits over six innings and Mystic hit three home runs on its way to a 6-1 victory over Ocean State on Sunday night at Fitch High School Field.
The Waves (15-10) have now lost back-to-back games and their season-series with the Schooners (12-9) at 1-1.
Mystic was able to get on the board first Sunday, scoring a pair of runs in the second. Matt O'Herron singled to start the frame, Brandon Cipolla walked and Garrett Kennedy followed with a double off the top of wall in right-center to score the first run. Nico Darras followed with a single to right to make it 2-0. Waves starter Jimmy Duff worked out of further trouble as he stranded runners on second and third by retiring the final three batters in the inning.
The Schooners used the long ball to score their next three runs. Tyler Boyd and Alec Keller hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth and Darras drilled a solo home run in the sixth to give Mystic a 5-1 lead. The Schooners capped their scoring with a single run in the seventh on the heels of four-straight walks.
Ocean State's offense was held in check Eckerle. The left-hander allowed just two hits over six innings. The Waves did have their chances against Eckerle but could not capitalize. Eckerle walked the first two batters of the game before retiring the next three and then hit the first batters of the fourth before stranding the runners on second and third.
The Waves were finally able to plate a run in the sixth. Christian Muscarello walked to start the inning, Mike Gerber followed with a double and Shaun McGraw plated the first Waves run with a sac fly to the wall in center.
Duff suffered his second loss of the season, allowing four runs on five hits over five innings. Zachary Soulier allowed a run in an inning of relief and Nicholas Cooney was dominant in 1.2 perfect innings of relief. Reed Gamache, Gerber and Michael Sherburne had the only three hits for the Waves.
Ocean State heads north to Vermont on Monday to face the Mountaineers. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
