Sportman hit .474 (9-for19) with two doubles, a homer and seven RBI. He also stole three bases and helped a resurgent Swamp Bats team go 4-1 this week. Sportman scored or drove in a run in 4 of those 5 games, and had two hits in the game in which he did not. He was a 2012 NECBL All-Star
Pitcher of the Week
RHP Kurt Sowa
Junior, Mystic Schooners
Rider University
Bensalem, PA
Sowa made two starts, striking out 13 and allowing just one earned run in 12 innings of work. He faced one batter over the minimum in a five shutout inning start and win over New Bedford on June 30th. He followed that with a seven innings of walk-free, one earned run baseball in beating Newport on July 6th. Sowa did not walk a batter in either start.

OF Brandon Cipolla (Mystic/Holy Cross)- Hit .500 (6-for-12) with a double, two homers and a steal
INF Joe Landi (North Adams/Rhode Island)- Hit .400 with four walks and five steals while striking out just once in five games
OF Brian O'Grady (Keene/Rutgers)- Hit .350 with a double, a homer and six RBI, the second most in the last week
OF Ben Roberts (Newport/Washington State)- Hit .450 (9-for-20) with four doubles and two RBI
LHP Andy Cox (Saratoga/Tennessee)- Threw four shutout, one-hit innings, walking no one and fanning seven in July 5th win over Danbury
RHP John Miles (Vermont/Missouri)- Threw six shutout innings, allowing just three base runners, and striking out 5 in June 30th win over Danbury
RHP Cameron Tekker (Saratoga/Virginia)- Faced one batter over the minimum and fanned seven in 3 shutout innings, saving two
RHP Frank Vilacha (New Bedford/New Haven)- Struck out six and allowed just three hits in six shutout innings in a July 1st no decision against Ocean State
Mother Nature, again- Just three of the NECBL's first 13 games this week went a full nine innings due to persistent rains in New England
NECBL to Host Team Canada- The NECBL will proudly host the Canadian Junior National U-18 team as they prepare for the 18U World Cup in Taiwan this coming August. The Canadians will be stopping at Holyoke on July 6th, Danbury on July 7th and New Bedford on July 9th. First pitches are 6:35, 5:05 and 6:30 respectively. The Canadian National program has produced such notables as Larry Walker, Justin Morneau and Jason Bay
That's Power- Vermont 3B Kenny Towns (Virginia) finished third in the TD Ameritrade College Home Run Derby on July 3rd. Towns had seven homers for the Cavaliers this spring

Alumni Notes- Ranger closer Joe Nathan was selected as an MLB All-Star for the sixth time in his career 7/6...C Tom Murphy (Holyoke '11) was named the South Atlantic League Player of the Week for the second time in three weeks. A SAL All-Star, Murphy is hitting .329 with 17 homers and 65 RBI....Reds C Ryan Hanigan (Lowell '01) caught Homer Bailey's no-hitter against San Francisco on 7/2. Hanigan was also behind the dish for Bailey's September 2012 no-hitter...1B Chris Colabello (Lowell '04), 2B and MVP Jim Negrych (Keene '04) and LHP Andrew Albers (Torrington '06) will all represent the International League in the Triple-A All-Star game. The NECBL has had an All-Star this season at every level of the Minor Leagues...OF Cole Gillespie (North Adams '05) became the 40th NECBL alum to see Major League action this season when he started for San Francisco against Los Angeles 7/5...Several NECBL alumni were selected to the Atlantic League's July 9th All-Star Game.
