Richmond Kickers News Release
Richmond, VA - (Wednesday, October 12, 2011) - Richmond Kickers are pleased to announce that long-time Assistant Coach, Jesse Myers, accepted the position of Head Coach with USL PRO's Rochester Rhinos. After spending over 15 years with the Richmond Kickers organization, his last day in Richmond will be Friday, October 14, 2011.
"On behalf of the Kickers organization, I would like to thank Jesse for his dedication, commitment and tireless service to our club over the last 15 years," commented Leigh Cowlishaw, Richmond Kickers Head Coach and Director of Soccer. "For Rochester to recruit one of our own staff members as their Head Coach speaks volumes on just how well-respected Jesse and the Kickers organization are seen in the soccer community. This is a well deserved opportunity and we wish Jesse well in the future."
Signing with the Kickers as the Assistant Coach of the professional team in January 1997, Myers has since coached over 400 games for the Kickers, helping the organization compile a 248-131-63 record. With his assistance, the Kickers have qualified for post-season play 14 of 15 seasons, making six league championship appearances (2001, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010), and claiming the USL-2 Championship title in 2006 and 2009. Using his extensive network of contacts throughout the U.S., Myers' scouting and recruiting background has helped bring top-quality players to the Richmond area, sending more than 10 players on to Major League Soccer over the last decade.
"I have so many people to thank for giving me the opportunity to spend the last 15 years with the Richmond Kickers," added Myers. "The experience that I have gained at such a first-class club has allowed me to take the next step as Head Coach. The support of the Ukrop Family, the Ripp Family, Leigh Cowlishaw and all of the coaches and staff members that I have worked with throughout the years has been immeasurable."
Myers' college coaching background began at Limestone College in South Carolina where he was a player from 1984-1986 and Assistant Coach in 1987. The following year, he led the Spartanburg Methodist College women's team to the regional tournament for the first time. In 1989, he moved to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte as Assistant Coach where he helped direct the team to a Metro Conference Championship and national rankings in 1991 and 1992. In 1993, he was named Head Coach at Division I Philadelphia Textile University where he amassed a record of 30-30-5.
An advocate for youth soccer, Myers played an integral role in developing the Richmond Kickers Youth Soccer Club. Having coached multiple youth teams of all levels, he most recently acted as the Kickers U.S. Soccer Development Academy Director, while coaching the U-18 Academy team. Richmond Kickers Technical Director, Ihor Dotsenko, will fulfill the role of Interim Academy Director and U-18 Academy Head Coach.
A full-service soccer club with over 8,000 players competing in youth, adult, amateur and professional programs, the Richmond Kickers pyramid structure serves as a model to soccer clubs across the country. For more information, visit RichmondKIckers.com.
