Mustukovs called up to Elmira

February 14, 2008 - SPHL (SPHL)
Knoxville Ice Bears News Release

Head coach Scott Hillman announced today that goalie Ervins Mustukovs has been called up to the Elmira Jackals of the ECHL.

The call up process in hockey in slightly different than it is in baseball. For instance, the Smokies baseball team is affiliated with the Chicago Cubs. However, in hockey there are no direct associations between teams, and since the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) is the only one on this level, there are three leagues that will recruit players. Those leagues are the Central Hockey League (CHL), International Hockey League (IHL) and East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). Some of the players receive temporary call ups, while others are permanent.

The Latvian goalie played 19 games with the Knoxville Ice Bears this season, during which time he had 10 wins and 7 losses (one overtime loss and one shutout loss). Mustukovs also had a save percentage of .908. Ervins Mustukovs was one of the returning players to the Ice Bears roster this season, and this call up ends his third stint with the team. Mustukovs also played 14 games with the Ice Bears last season and most recently left the team for a brief time in December after being called up to the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL.

"We are very proud of all of our players that are being called up; however, Mustukovs was a very valuable part of our team. In fact, he had the only shut out of the season," said head coach Scott Hillman.

On a separate note, defenseman Jason LePine will rejoin the team. LePine played 11 games with the Ice Bears in mid-season before being called up to the Corpus Christi Rayz of the CHL on February 4. During those 11 games, LePine scored two goals and had 7 assists. LePine will meet the team in Jacksonville for the away game tomorrow.

The Knoxville Ice Bears return home on Saturday, February 16 as they take on the Columbus Cottonmouths. Visit www.knoxvilleicebears.com for more information.

Thank you for supporting the Ice Bears and growing hockey in East Tennessee!
