Lexington County Blowfish News Release
Lexington County, SC - The Lexington County Blowfish, under the Lake Murray moniker on Saturday night, rallied to eliminate a 3-0 deficit, but missed out on taking the lead in extras, dropping a 4-3 decision to the Martinsville Mustangs in front of a sold out crowd at Lexington County Baseball Stadium.
Blowfish raise over $3,000 for Lake Murray's annual 4th of July Fireworks Show! Lake Murray Jerseys a home run with the sellout crowd!
The Blowfish could not capitalize on a glorious chance in the bottom of the 11th with the game tied. Trevor Bradley (USC-Aiken) led the inning off with a single. Sly Edwards (Charleston Southern) backed him up with another base hit. A sacrifice bunt from Mitchell Price (USC-Aiken), and an intentional walk of Dalton Duty (University of Central Florida) loaded the bases.
Mustangs pitcher Reggie Johnson, who had already blown the save earlier in the contest, induced a 6-4-3 double play off of the bat of Kyle Bailey (Anderson University) to end the threat. In kind, an RBI double by Mustangs DH Justin Datillo in the 12th proved to be the difference, and put the Mustangs ahead for good.
The Blowfish could not push any runs home after the first seven innings of play, but suddenly came alive in the eighth and ninth. Bailey reached on an error, Jared Williams (University of South Carolina) singled after that. Madison Stokes (University of South Carolina) bought home the first run with an RBI single, and Austin Garcia followed suit with a groundout that got the job done to cut the lead to one.
In the final frame, Edwards ripped an extra base hit down the line, and advanced on an error to third. Price grounded out, but Duty would not let the effort go to waste. He slipped a base hit into right to score Edwards and tie the game.
During the Blowfish bat quiet period, Mustangs starting pitcher Garrett Lovorn tossed seven spectacular innings. He did not allow a run during that span.
It was the Mustangs that slugged the first home run in Lexington County Baseball Stadium history, as he crushed a pitch over the left field wall to give Martinsville a 2-0 lead at that point. They would tack on one more run in the sixth inning to extend a lead that would not stand the test of time.
Under the Lake Murray name for Lake Murray Night, the Blowfish raised over $3,000 towards the annual Lake Murray fireworks show on July 4. Each uniform worn that night was given away in a silent auction with all proceeds benefitting the Independence Day show.
The team will not play on Sunday, but they will return to action to host the Holly Springs Salamanders on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. at Lexington County Baseball Stadium. Tickets are available by calling the box office at 803-254-FISH, by going online to blowfishbaseball.com, and at Blowfish on Main at 101 East Main Street in Lexington, S.C.
