Chicago Mustangs News Release
Hoffman Estates, IL- The Chicago Mustangs, proud members of the Major Arena Soccer League (www.MASLSoccer.com), won a thrilling back-and-forth matchup with the Wichita B-52's 8-5.
The Mustangs, coming off of a tough loss to Missouri, took the early lead just 8 minutes into the first quarter when Matthew Stewart set forward Alexis Camarena up with a great pass that he absolutely pummeled past Wichita goalkeeper Boris Pardo. The goal was Camarena's 6th of the season. The B-52's quickly answered back when midfielder Abel Sebele tapped an unassisted goal past Jesus Flores just 45 seconds later. Chicago and Wichita spent the rest of the first quarter trying to utilize their speed to stretch the floor but finished the quarter tied 1-1.
Wichita flipped the script in the second when just 1 minute in, Colin Lawter scored his 3rd goal of the season on an empty net after Matt Clare drew Flores out of position. The Mustangs got called for several penalties and looked to be treading water until 5 minutes left in the half when Hewerton fired a shot on a restart and defensemen Joshio Sandoval tapped in his 6th goal of the year to tie it up.
The Mustangs almost took the lead halfway through the third quarter as a Matthew Stewart attempt took several bounces near the goal line but never actually crossed over. Neither team was able to find an answer for each other until forward Miguel Vaca turned on the jets and blew past a Wichita defender and fired an absolute laser to give the Mustangs a 3-2 lead.
The B-52's were able to tie it up less than a minute into the 4th when Alex Mosely drew Flores into an aggressive stance then fired a shot across his body. Mere seconds later Mustangs midfielder Taylor Bond stepped into a shot that appeared to be a blur off of his foot to re-take the lead 4-3. Only 2 minutes later the Mustangs took a 5-3 lead on one of the more amazing set-ups and shots you'll see. Stewart flared a pass up to Hewerton and he connected in mid-air to extend the lead. Wichita cut the lead to 1 when Matt Clare booted one past Flores on a corner kick from Travis Pittman. The Mustangs re-gained the 2 goal lead with under 3 minutes to go when Vaca lifted a lead pass over everybody in perfect stride with Stewart as he did the rest and fired it home to make it 6-4. Wichita went to 6 attackers after the Stewart goal and Vaca quickly did what he's been doing all night as he won a footrace to the ball and tapped it home to make the score 7-4. Things got a bit heated after the Vaca goal as both teams cleared the benches to midfield leading to a double penalty for Chicago as well as a penalty for Wichita. The B-52's capitalized on the advantage when Byron Alvarez chipped one past Flores to make it 7-5. Less than a minute after the Wichita goal, Chicago made a statement that this was their game and Omar Santillan scored into an open net to re-extend the lead to 3.
