Great Falls Voyagers News Release

GREAT FALLS, Mont. (August 27, 2014) - The Great Falls Voyagers had to settle for a split of their two-game series with the Billings Mustangs, as the visitors claimed a 4-1 decision Wednesday night at Centene Stadium.

After a couple scoreless innings on both sides, Billings (18-11, 35-32) took the lead in the third. Argenis Aldazoro did the honors for the visitors, taking Kelvis Valerio (0-1) deep for his eighth homer of the season.

The lead did not last long, as the Voyagers (12-16, 35-31) picked up their lone run in the bottom half against Mustangs starter Tyler Mahle (5-4). An error started things for Great Falls, then after the first of three singles on the night for Ryan Jones, Hunter Jones singled to plate the tying run.

Billings regained the lead against Valerio in the fifth. The first two reached in the frame, and Ty Washington collected a sacrifice fly to give the visitors the lead back.

Valerio was removed after the fifth inning, allowing two runs on four hits with three strikeouts in his Pioneer League debut.

The Mustangs added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth against the Voyager bullpen. A walk and a hit batter put two on with one out, and both then came around to score when Brian O'Grady doubled.

The three-run lead proved to be enough for Billings, as Mahle allowed nine hits, but just the one run in six and two-thirds innings of work.

In relief of Mahle, Jordan Remer and Brennan Bernardino allowed just one base runner over the last two and a third frames, with Bernardino getting the final three outs to collect his seventh save.

The Voyagers continue their homestand Thursday with a makeshift doubleheader against the Helena Brewers at Centene Stadium. The first game will be a resumption of the suspended game from August 20, with Great Falls leading 4-0 in the bottom of the third. After that game is completed, a seven-inning game will follow roughly 30 minutes later. First pitch is set for 6:00 and coverage will begin at 5:45 on 1400 AM KXGF and gfvoyagers.com.
