Muskegon Edges Dubuque in Offensive Showdown, 6-5

December 10, 2020 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

A late push from Dubuque was not enough as the Saints couldn't muster enough firepower in a 6-5 loss to Muskegon. In a back-and-forth game, Muskegon led by as many as three two times, but Dubuque closed the gap consistently. Tanner Kelly had three points for the Jacks in the winning effort and Riley Stuart notched his first USHL goal in a two-point game for Dubuque.

-The Lumberjacks started the game quickly as they scored twice in the first five minutes of the first period. Cam Berg, the Jacks leading goal scorer, found the back of the net first. Shortly after David Hymovitch threw a puck on net from 60 feet and beat McCarthy for a quick 2-0 lead.

-Reggie Millette got the Saints on the board with his first of the season as he snuck the puck behind his back. Riley Stuart got his fourth point and Tommy Middleton also assisted on the goal.

-Muskegon was able to regain their two-goal lead with a beauty by Danil Gushchin. Gushchin's goal was his sixth already on the season as he beat McCarthy on a two on one, taking it to the net himself.

-Both teams traded chances in the early going of the second period, but no goals came of the five-on-five battle.

-Muskegon made it 4-1 on a goal from Tanner Kelly on the power play. Dubuque had a three on one shorthanded chance seconds before that, but the Muskegon power play capitalized on the counterattack to extend their lead.

-Riley Stuart gave Dubuque a boost to end the period as the Saints tallied on the power play to make it a two-goal game. Stuart's power play goal was his first of the USHL and his fifth point in seven games this season for Dubuque.

-Things opened back up in the third period. Dubuque brought the game within one as Daniyal Dzhaniyev scored his team-leading fifth of the season.

-Muskegon responded with two goals of their own to push the lead to 6-3 at about the midway point of the period. The goals came from Alex Gagne and Owen Mehlenbacher.

-That proved to be just enough for the Jacks as Dubuque did not go quietly into the night. PJ Fletcher and Stephen Halliday both tallied their second goals of the season late in the period to keep Dubuque's chances very much alive.

-Christian Stoever made a few of his biggest saves late in the game as the Saints had multiple chances to equalize. On the night he turned away 31 shots in a game where Muskegon was outshot badly.

-Dubuque will stay at home to take on the Jacks Friday and Saturday night as well. The two will battle twice more to close out the month of December.
