Murfreesboro Musicians News Release
The Murfreesboro Musicians defeated the Defending World Basketball Association Champion, Rome Gladiators at the Musicians Arena at Oakland High School in Murfreesboro on Saturday night 116-97.
The Musicians took control of the game midway through the first half and took at 50-36 score into the locker-room at the half. Murfreesboro extended their lead to 20 in the third quarter and withstood several Gladiator runs in the fourth quarter to secure the win for the first year WBA expansion franchise.
"It was a good win for our young team! We performed at a very high level tonight, and defeated a very good team from Rome. You can't take anything away from Rome, for they are a very talented team. But we felt like we had to make a statement tonight since it was clear that after our first game that there were those who did not feel like we could compete with Rome or contend for the WBA Championship this season. I'd have to say that many people's thought patterns concerning that may have changed after tonight's game with the Gladiators. We are involved right now in a four game series to open up the season with Rome, which is really unfair to both of our teams, for we're just beating each other up! But that is the way the schedule fell. Now we have to prepare for the third match-up back at Rome in early May, and our last two games against each other for the regular season should be something to see. It is definitely a high standard of professional basketball between two outstanding teams!" states Musicians Head Coach Steve Tucker.
The Musicians were led to victory again by Guard, Tommy Gunn, who scored a game high and season high 41 points. Cedric McGinnis with 23 points led four other Musicians with double figure performances. Point Guard, Ray Trowell had 14 points and 7 assist, Dameon Goodman chipped in 11 points, and Dexter Hall had 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The Musicians will be idle until next Friday when they travel to Tuscaloosa, AL to take the Druid City Dragons. Murfreesboro will play at home again at Musicians Arena at Oakland High School on Sunday, May 7th vs the Gainesville Knights. Tip-off will be at 7pm.
MUSICIANS NOTES:
With his 41 point performance against Rome, Musicians Guard, Tommy Gunn has pushed his season scoring average to 29.0 points per game. Gunn is by far one of the most explosive offensive players in the World Basketball Association for the 2006 WBA season.
