Bakersfield Blitz News Release

Bakersfield, Calif. - The af2 league office announced today that WR/DB Nathan Munson was named the U.S. Army Ironman of the Week for the league. Munson becomes the first Blitz player to be selected for a league award this season and the second in team history. Last season, Eric Mahanke was the only Blitz player to be selected for a league award, winning the Ironman bid during Week 15. Central Valley quarterback Juston Wood was named Offensive Player of the Week and Manchester defensive specialist William Haith was named ADT Defensive Player of the Week.

Munson (5'11", 205-lbs, Upper Iowa) had the largest single game yardage total of the season for any Blitz player. He racked up 72 yards receiving on four catches with a pair of touchdowns. He also picked up 102 yards on five kickoff returns and intercepted two passes for 14 additional return yards. His first interception of the game came while the Blitz were holding a 12-point lead late in the first half. By picking off the pass and running it in for a touchdown, he lifted the Blitz to an insurmountable lead at the end of two quarters. Munson also finished third on the Blitz on Saturday night with 3.0 tackles.

On the year, the veteran of four af2 seasons has been the Blitz biggest all-around performer. He ranks third on the team in receptions and receiving yards and second with six touchdowns. He is second on the team in all-purpose yards as well, and has scored a touchdown in the last four games. Defensively, he trails only Kharee Shorter in tackles and is tied for the team lead with seven pass breakups on one of the top defenses in the entire league.

Friday night football in Bakersfield continues next weekend as the Blitz take on the Tulsa Talons at 7:00 p.m. on May 13th. That night, the Blitz are guaranteeing a victory against their West Division rivals, and if the Blitz don't defeat Tulsa that night, everyone in attendance will get a free ticket to their next home game the following week against rival San Diego. The first 2,000 fans through the doors will also get a Blitz Dashboard Memo Pad, courtesy of KGEO "Hot Talk" AM 1230.
