May 10, 2005 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release
CHICAGO - Central Valley quarterback JUSTON WOOD, Bakersfield wide receiver/defensive back NATHAN MUNSON and Manchester defensive specialist WILLIAM HAITH have been named the Offensive Player, U.S. Army Ironman and ADT Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for Week 6 of the 2005 season.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Wood (6-1, 210, Portland State), in his second season, led the Coyotes to a 64-63 victory over the Tulsa Talons on Saturday. Wood dissected the Tulsa defense with 28 of 43 passing for 396 yards and nine touchdowns with no interceptions. His nine scores tied a club record. He was on target in the fourth quarter leading the Coyotes to four touchdowns in the final frame. His final touchdown pass came with only 17 seconds left as he found DeRonn Finley for a 33-yard score putting the Coyotes up for good. This was just one play after Tulsa had taken the lead. Wood completed passes to seven different teammates but his main receiver was George Williams, who reeled in 14 Wood passes for 210 yards and four touchdowns. Wood is the first Coyote to win a weekly award this season. The last Central Valley player be honored was Kenyatte Morgan, in Week 17 of last season when he received this same award.
U.S. ARMY IRONMAN OF THE WEEK
Munson (5-11, 205, Upper Iowa), playing in his fourth season, was a key contributor in the Blitz' dominating 75-40 victory over the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings on Saturday night. On offense Munson was Bakersfield's second leading receiver catching four passes for 72 yards and two touchdowns. He also registered one rush for four yards. On special teams Munson returned five kickoffs for 102 yards. Finally, on defense Munson picked off two passes and recorded 3.0 tackles (2UA 2A). His first interception came right before the end of the first half and gave the momentum to the Blitz. With the Battle Wings near their own endzone and only seconds left in the first half Munson intercepted a Tim Hicks pass and returned it ten yards for a touchdown. The touchdown pushed the halftime lead to 35-17. The Blitz then took the first possession of the second half straight to the endzone to take command of the game. This is Munson's first ever weekly award.
ADT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Haith (5-11, 190, Liberty), a rookie, was all over the field in Manchester's 46-37 victory over the Louisville Fire on Friday night. The win was big for the Manchester Wolves as they moved into a tie for first place in the East Division. Against the Fire, Haith recorded 12.0 tackles (6UA, 12A). His 12 tackles tie him for second most in a game this season. His 13.0 tackle performance against Macon a week ago still stands as the best tackling performance this season. One of Haith's assisted tackles was for a loss, but he made his biggest impact in the secondary, breaking up seven Matt Sauk passes. This is Haith's first weekly award of his career. He is the third Manchester player to win an award this season. Jake Eaton won Offensive Player of the Week in Week 3 and J.J. McKelvey won U.S. Army Ironman of the Week last week.
