Mudcats Waste Big Lead in 11-10 Walk-off Loss

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Jace Avina homered and had three hits, Jesus Chirinos also homered and Jadher Areinamo had four hits and a RBI, but the Carolina Mudcats fell in walk-off fashion in the ninth 11-10 to the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers at Atrium Health Ballpark.
Avina got the Mudcats (28-17, 61-47) going early with his two-run home run in the second, but the Cannon Ballers (22-23, 57-58) answered back with a run in the same frame. Luke Adams and Chirinos then lifted Carolina to a 5-1 lead with a RBI double and two-run homer respectively. The Carolina lead then grew to 7-1 in the fourth with help of a Kannapolis' error and a RBI double from Areinamo.
The Mudcats had their first of two six-run leads in the middle of the fourth before the Cannon Ballers came back with three in the bottom side to cut the deficit to 7-4. Carolina responded with three in the fifth to go up six again at 10-4. That rally included Dylan O'Rae's first RBI hit, a run-scoring balk and a run-scoring wild pitch.
Kannapolis trailed 10-4 after five, but went on to chip away with two in the sixth and two in the seventh before getting Camilletti's game-winning three-run double in the ninth.
Yujanyer Herrara started for the Mudcats and gave up four runs over three and 2/3 innings. He gave up three of those four run in his fourth and final inning after allowing a RBI single to Camilletti, and losing a run-scoring wild pitch.
Carolina reliever Jeison Pena took over in the fourth and would be one of three relievers in the game for the Mudcats as he would later be relieved by Tyler Wehrle in the sixth. Costello then took over in the eighth. Both Pena and Wehrle allowed two runs over an inning and 2/3 and Costello allowed three over an inning and 1/3 while taking the loss.
The Mudcats scored all 10 of their runs against the first two Kannapolis pitchers to appear in the game with five runs off starter Shane Murphy and five more runs off Zach Franklin. Three of Franklin's, however, were allowed in by reliever Anderson Comas as he replaced Franklin in the fifth. Comas returned for the sixth and worked a scoreless frame before giving the game to Connor Pellerin and Billy Seidl. Pellerin went on to hold the Mudcats scoreless over the next two frames and Seidl (W, 5-3) worked a scoreless ninth.
The victory dropped the Mudcats into a 2-1 deficit in their six-game road series in Kannapolis. The loss also cut the first-place Mudcats lead in the second half race to 4.0 games up on the Lynchburg Hillcats.
