Carolina Mudcats News Release
ZEBULON, NC - Jacob Schrader and Sean Godfrey were both 4-for-5, Connor Lien hit a three-run home run in the seventh and Joey Meneses drove in four as the Mudcats won their fourth straight with a 13-3 drubbing of the Keys at Five County Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Mudcats (11-10) trailed 1-0 after three, but rallied for two in the fourth to take a one run lead before the midway point in the game. The Keys (13-11) came back with two runs of their own in the fifth and jumped back out in front 3-2. Carolina then went on to plate four runs in the seventh and seven unearned runs in the eighth while winning their third straight game in the series.
Matt Marksberry (1-0, 5.56) pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh and earned the win. He walked two, but did allow a hit or run in his appearance.
Britt Robertshaw (S, 1) worked a scoreless eighth and ninth while earning his first save of the season. He allowed three hits, walked one and struck out three.
Yean Carlos Gil started for Carolina and allowed three runs on seven hits over five innings pitched. He allowed a run in the first after giving up a RBI triple to Trey Mancini. Mancini also doubled during Frederick's two run fourth and was 3-for-3 in the game.
The Mudcats had originally tied and taken the lead in the game when they scored twice in the fourth. The tying run came in on a wild pitch thrown by starter Luis Gonzalez and Meneses drove in the go-ahead with a single to left.
Gil left after the fifth and after allowing three earned runs on seven hits over five innings. He walked a season high three batters and struck out three, but did not factor into the decision.
The Mudcats rallied back from the 3-2 fifth inning deficit with a four run seventh and did so against reliever Joe Keller. Dustin Peterson brought in a run with a single to left-center in the seventh put the Mudcats up on top again at 4-3. Keller (1-2, 3.63) eventually loaded the bases in the seventh and was pulled from the game. Reliever Nick Nowottnick came in and allowed two of the three he inherited to score after Meneses hit a sacrifice fly to center and Carlos Franco singled in a run.
The Keys nearly escaped the eighth without allowing a run, but a two-out throwing error by third baseman Drew Dosch would plate two Carolina runs and eventually lead to a seven run inning. Meneses had a two-run single in the eighth and Lien capped the rally with a three-run home run. The Mudcats scored seven unearned runs in the eighth and took a 13-3 lead.
The seven run eighth marked a season high by the Mudcats for runs in an inning. They also collected 15 hits in the victory and set season highs for hits and runs in a home game on Sunday.
Carolina won the series with Sunday's victory and have won four straight games overall. The Mudcats will send RHP Lucas Sims (1-3, 8.59) to the mound on Monday night, as they look for the sweep in the four game set. RHP Jarrett Miller (1-0, 5.00) will start for the Keys.
