Knoxville Smokies News Release
SEVIERVILLE, Tenn.- Tennessee Smokies fans filed in to Smokies Park on Monday night hoping to see great baseball and a fireworks show following the game.
The home team did not let them down through eight innings of play before the Smokies bullpen imploded, allowing five runs in the final frame to suffer a 6-4 loss on Memorial Day.
Tenneessee starter Garrett Mock started the game and threw six innings of no-hit baseball before allowing a single to second baseman Edgar Gonzalez to open the seventh inning. Mock finished the inning and left the game holding a 3-1 lead but would only have a no-decision to show for his effort.
The Smokies got on the board in the fourth inning when center fielder Jerry Gil launched a two-run shot that nearly hit the scoreboard in left field scoring second baseman Danny Richar who led off the inning with a single to center field.
Richar provided theatrics of his own the very next inning when the speedy second baseman ripped a ball to center field that ricocheted off the wall allowing the 22-year old to circle the bases for an inside-the-park home run to put Tennessee ahead 3-0 in the game.
The Smokies carried a 4-1 lead into the top of the ninth inning but the Mudcats were able to claw back against reliever Matt Wilkinson with a back-to-back home runs from JC Muniz and pinch hitter Kevin Randel.
With the game tied at 4-4, Tennessee turned to Chris Kinsey but he would fare no better, allowing the game winning double to Ryan Bear before Gonzalez added an insurance run with an RBI single to left field.
The two teams continue their series tommorrow with a 7:15 p.m. game at Smokies Park.
Short Hops:
* Richar went 3-for-4 to raise his average to .339, good for second best in the Southern League
* First baseman Jesus Cota finished 2-for-4 in the loss
* Former Smokies player Anthony Reyes has been recalled by the St. Louis Cardinals and will start tomorrow against the Houston Astros
