Mudcats' Sanchez No-Hits Arizona

Carolina Mudcats News Release

Miami, FL --- Former Carolina Mudcats starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez hurled himself into baseball lore, throwing a 103-pitch no-hitter to lead the Florida Marlins by the Arizona Diamondbacks at Dolphin Stadium on Wednesday night.

Sanchez, who threw a seven-hit shutout in his final Double-A start against first-half champion Chattanooga on June 19th, became the first rookie to throw a no-hitter since St. Louis' Bud Smith achieved the feat against San Diego on September 1, 2001. Sanchez struck out six and walked four.

Just 22, Sanchez, now 7-2 with a 2.28 ERA over 13 starts, is one of 21 rookies to see action in the major leagues with the Marlins in 2006. Florida continues its homestand tonight against the Phillies, and are three games behind San Diego for the National League wild-card.

The no-hitter also ended the longest drought in major league history between no-hitters, spanning 6,364 games since Randy Johnson's perfect game as a Diamondback over Atlanta on May 18, 2004.

Sanchez's shutout over the Lookouts in May was the first of his professional career, which reached 55 starts at that stage. Sanchez is also the first-ever former Mudcat to throw a no-hitter in the major leagues.

The Sanchez no-hitter was the fourth in Marlins history, and the first since AJ Burnett tossed a nine-walk no-hitter at San Diego on May 12, 2001. Sanchez was 3-6 for the Mudcats before being called to the majors to defeat the New York Yankees on June 25th in his major league debut.

Miguel Olivo caught Sanchez's no-no, while four former Mudcats appeared in the game: left fielder Josh Willingham, third baseman Miguel Cabrera, pinch-runner Eric Reed and Arizona left fielder Luis Gonzalez.

Arizona's starting catcher Miguel Montero, who began 2006 at Double-A Tennessee, was 0-3 with a strikeout on Wednesday night. As the Smokies' catcher, Montero was 1-8 with an RBI-double in three starts against Sanchez, who lost one start and received two no-decisions in the others against Tennessee.
