Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
Jacksonville, Fla. - The Montgomery Biscuits scored four seventh inning runs, including three with two outs, to overtake the Jacksonville Suns and take game one of the best of five South Division Championship Series by the final score of 4-3.
The Suns opened an early lead on Montgomery starter Jeff Niemann by capitalizing on Biscuits mistakes. Tony Abreu singled to right field in the second inning and when Montgomery right fielder Justin Ruggiano bobbled the ball, Abreu bolted to second base. After Abreu moved to third on a groundout, he scored on a passed ball to open a 1-0 Jacksonville lead.
Jacksonville added to the advantage in the third inning when Chin-Lung Hu legged out a two-out infield single and Tydus Meadows crushed a two-run homerun to open a 3-0 advantage.
That 3-0 lead held as Suns starter Spike Lundberg held the Biscuits to four hits through his first six innings. In the seventh, Biscuits leadoff man Michael Coleman blasted a homerun to cut Jacksonville's lead to 3-1. Lundberg sat the next two Biscuits batters down, but allowed a single and double then left the game. Suns reliever Wesley Wright came on a walked the only batter he faced. Reliever B.J. LaMura next entered the game and walked Johnny Raburn with the bases loaded, cutting the Suns lead to 3-2. Biscuits OF Justin Ruggiano next belted a two-run ground rule double over the leftfield wall that put the Biscuits ahead 4-3.
Montgomery's pitching staff shut down Jacksonville's offense late as the Suns recorded only two hits after the third inning. The Suns had the game-tying run aboard in the ninth inning, but Montgomery's Jean Machi came on and recorded the final out for the save.
Jeff Niemann picked up the victory as Wesley Wright fell in the relief loss. Jean Machi saved the game by recording the final out.
Game two of the best of five South Division Championship is slated for 7:05 p.m. ET Friday. Suns LH Scott Elbert will face Biscuits RH Andy Sonnanstine. The Zooperstars! will perform during the game while Riptide will play a post game concert. Tickets are available by calling the Suns box office at 904.358.2846 or by visiting jaxsuns.com.
