
Mudcats rebound on Saturday for 7-3 win over Jaxx

JACKSON, TENN. - The Mudcats (16-27) rebound after losing by 11 runs on Friday night, beating the Diamond Jaxx (22-21) on Saturday, 7-3. The Jaxx stay pat in the North Divison, two games back of first place Chattanooga. Mudcat southpaw, Tom Cochran (4-4) dealt six quality innings, earning his second victory of the season agains the Diamond Jaxx. The Jaxx lead the current series, two games to one. Juan Francisco and Stephen Chapman pick up two hit games for the Mudcats and Jason Baur tallied three hits in the win for Carolina. Dan Cortes (0-3) suffered his third loss in five starts for the Diamond Jaxx.
Jaxx starter, Dan Cortes has had problems in the first inning this season and it continued Saturday. The Mudcats scored two runs in the top of the first. Shaun Cumberland drove home leadoff man, Sean Henry with a single to right, giving the Cats there first run. Later, Todd Frazier brought home Cumberland on an RBI fielders choice for Carolina's second tally in the first frame. Cortes has given up seven runs in the first inning, in his first five starts with the Diamond Jaxx.
The Mudcats added to their lead scoring a run in the third, but the Jaxx finally got on the board in the bottom of the third. Greg Halman lined a single to right-center and Ezequiel Carrera scored on an error, shortening the Carolina lead to 3-1 after the third.
Dan Cortes gave up another run in the fourth and fifth, leaving after five innings. Cortes walked a season high six batters and struck out three in the five innings of work. The Diamond Jaxx trailed the Mudcats after the top of the fifth, 5-1.
The Jaxx pulled a little bit closer in the bottom of the fifth. Travis Garcia tripled in Matt Mangini and Ezequiel Carrera brought home Garcia with a bunt single. The Jaxx pulled within 5-3 after the fifth.
The Jaxx called on Joe Newby for the third straight day on Saturday and worked 1.1 of scoreless relief. Newby came on after Ricky Orta was removed due to an injury.
The Mudcats pulled away in the top of the eighth inning scoring two runs. Stephen Chapman ripped a two out double off of Jaxx reliever, Phillipe Aumont scoring Zach Cozart and Juan Francisco. The two-RBI double gave the Mudcats a 7-3 advantage that turned out to be the final.
The Jaxx will look to RHP Steve Bray (4-6, 3.30) on the mound on Sunday, with the first pitch at 2:05. LHP Camilo Vazquez (2-3, 5.90) takes the ball for the Mudcats on Sunday. The Mudcats will deal three lefties in the final three games of the series versus the Jaxx.
