HOOVER, Ala. - The Birmingham Barons (27-16) scored ten runs in the first two innings, blowing out the Tennessee Smokies (22-21) in a 15-0 ballgame to take the series victory on Saturday night in game three of the series at Regions Park.
With Jacksonville's 8-3 win over Chattanooga, the Smokies stay two games back of the Lookouts for the Southern League's North Division lead.
Barons starter John Ely won his tenth game of the season, pitching seven scoreless innings where he only allowed four hits and he struck out five Smokies.
Birmingham wasted no time in building a lead in the first inning. Dayan Viciedo hit a broken-bat RBI single, followed by a Jim Gallagher also hitting a run-scoring single to make it 2-0.
However in the second inning the Barons scored eight runs to increase the lead to 10-0. The rally was highlighted by a three-run home run by catcher Jared Price off of Smokies reliever Marco Carrillo that put the lead to ten.
Smokies starter Andrew Cashner (2-2) lasted an inning and a third, giving up eight runs on seven hits.
The Barons added two more in the bottom of the third and three in the sixth to cap their scoring night.
Tennessee returns home to Smokies Park to begin a ten-game homestand on Aug. 1. The Smokies will first face the Jacksonville Suns, the AA affiliate of the Florida Marlins, before beginning a series with the Chattanooga Lookouts, the AA affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
