Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, N.C. - The Carolina Mudcats drove in two runs in the bottom of the ninth, but fell short of the comeback against the Potomac Nationals in a 13-11 offensive marathon on Wednesday night. Carolina drops to 21-44 overall and Potomac improved to 38-26, winning their first series at Five County Stadium.
In a game that lasted four hours and nine minutes, the clubs combined for 24 runs, 33 hits, five errors and stranded a total of 24 runners on base.
Mason Radeke (0-2) was notched with the loss after two innings of work with six hits, six runs, and five earned runs. He left the game in the third some elbow soreness. Richie Mirowski (5-3) picked up the win in relief after hurling two innings, allowing three runs. Rob Wort pitched the Nationals out of the ninth inning jam for his third save.
Tyler Naquin started the ninth with a walk. Francisco Lindor's single drove Naquin in from second. Lindor advanced to second on defensive indifference, and third base on a wild pitch, before Joey Wendle brought him home with a hit.
Trailing by two, Jordan Smith ground into a double play with runners at first and second. Wendle advanced to third, but a groundout to first by Greenwell ended the seesaw, four-hour marathon.
Potomac jumped out to an early lead in the first inning with three runs and added to that lead with three runs in the second and fourth innings as well. The Nationals also tacked on a run in the seventh and two runs in the eighth.
Carolina scored a run in the first on a Lindor walk and Smith single. The Mudcats picked up three runs in the bottom of the second inning when Joey Wendle drove a ball into right field for ground rule double, driving in Naquin and Paddy Matera. Jerrud Sabourin followed with a single on a sharp ground ball to second base. Wendle scored to close the Mudcats within two, 6-4.
Sabourin brought home Naquin in the fourth. Matera's second hit of the night scored Greenwell in the fifth to cut into a four run deficit.
Carolina drove in three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning beginning with a bunt single by Naquin. Lindor reached first base on an error by second baseman Adrian Sanchez. In a bizarre play, Naquin scored from third when catcher Adrian Nieto overthrew Richie Mirowski on a return throw to the mound. Wendle brought home his third run thanks to his second double of the night, and he scored on Sabourin's third knock to cut the lead to one, 10-9.
In all, Wendle finished with three hits and four RBI. Sabourin recorded three hits and three RBI. Naquin, Lindor, Smith and Matera finished with two hits each.
The Mudcats finish up the first half with five games in four days at Myrtle Beach. First pitch against the Pelicans on Thursday night is set for 7:05 p.m. Carolina returns home on June 24th for a four-game series with the Frederick Keys.
