Mudbugs Win Goaltenders' Duel in Texas
March 13, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, TX - Ryan Munce posted a 33-save shutout and Shawn Limpright scored the game ¬â¢s only goal as the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs edged the Texas Brahmas 1-0 Sunday afternoon at the NyTex Sports Centre. The win puts Bossier-Shreveport ahead of Texas for second place in the Berry Conference at 34-24-3 and extends their win streak to five games.
Munce (4-2-1) was brilliant in goal for the Mudbugs on the way to the second shutout of his brief career with the club, which spans just seven starts. Texas netminder Wayne Savage (20-14-3) nearly equaled Munce ¬â¢s effort at the other end however, finishing the 31 stops and being beaten just once by Limpright.
Both teams generated exactly 11 shots on goal in the opening period, but Ryan Munce and Wayne Savage traded saves to keep the game scoreless. The Mudbugs had three powerplays in the first, including 1:31 of 5-on-3 time, and Texas had one advantage as the game stayed scoreless after one.
The goaltenders continued to be the story through the second period as the Brahmas missed on four powerplays and the ¬ËBugs could not convert on two more. Texas held a narrow 22-20 shot and the 0-0 stalemate continued through 40 minutes.
Every shot in the third period took on more significance, but more than half the period passed before a puck finally went on the net. After Michael Couch rushed the puck ahead and centered a pass that was knocked away from Shawn Limpright, Andy Contois picked up the puck along the boards. Contois wheeled into the high slot and fired a shot that deflected off Savage ¬â¢s glove and landed behind the rookie goaltender, where Limpright knocked it into the net for his 19th goal of the season at 11:51.
The Brahmas challenged in the final moments with the net empty, but the ¬ËBugs finished off their first 1-0 victory since March of 2009. The teams combined to finish 0 for 11 on the powerplay (The ¬ËBugs were 0 for 6 and the Brahmas 0 for 5), and Bossier-Shreveport outshot Texas 33-32 in total.
The Mudbugs will next play three more road games this week with their first-ever visits to teams from the former International Hockey League. The ¬ËBugs will be in Fort Wayne, Indiana to face the Komets on Wednesday and Friday before visiting the Bloomington PrairieThunder on Saturday.
Wednesday ¬â¢s game is set for 6:30 pm Central time and will be shown live on CHL-TV. Visit the Mudbugs broadcast schedule page for radio broadcast information.
