Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
THUNDERSTRUCK AGAIN â With two goals from Travis Clayton and 21 saves from goaltender Jamie Vandespyker, the Wichita Thunder defeated the Mudbugs for the fourth time this season 3-1 at the Kansas Coliseum. After a scoreless first period, Clayton jammed a puck past Ken Carroll at 6:22 of the second period for his 33rd goal of the season. In the third period, a Wichita dump-in hit a seam in the boards and kicked out in front of a vacated Mudbugs net. Mike Carter slammed home the gift goal at 9:35 for a 2-0 Thunder lead, but the Mudbugs would respond. David Oliver scored on the power play for Bossier-Shreveport, but Clayton added his second goal just 1:05 later for a 3-1 Thunder lead. In a penalty-filled contest, the Mudbugs killed 10 shorthanded situations, but fell to 0-4-0 against the Thunder this season.
BLAIR HANDLES THE BRAHMAS â On Saturday night, the Mudbugs defeated the Fort Worth Brahmas 2-0 as goaltender Jeff Blair made 26 saves for his sixth career shutout in front of 5,571 fans at the Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum in Fort Worth, TX. After a scoreless first period in which both teams traded chances, Jason Basile fired a rocket shot past Brahmas goaltender Larry Sterling at 16:19 of the second period for his eighth goal of the season and a 1-0 Mudbugs lead. The Mudbugs would look for insurance in the third period with a two-man advantage midway through the frame but failed to score. Blair would continue his perfect play down to the game's final minutes with the Mudbugs shorthanded and received insurance when Chris Brassard fired a puck the full length of the ice into the empty net for his 27th goal of the year.
STUNG BY THE BEES â On Sunday evening, the Mudbugs were held to just 16 shots on goal in a 2-1 loss against the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees at the CenturyTel Center. The loss was the Mudbugs' first ever against the second-year franchise and dropped their overall record to 33-16-4 this season. They remain one win away from clinching their second consecutive Northeast Division title. The Killer Bees struck in the first period with goals from Troy Linna and Jason Hawes. After a scoreless second period, the Mudbugs began to threaten in the third period, but failed to beat Bees goaltender Jeff Levy until Craig Soke scored from the slot on a two-man advantage power play goal with the goaltender pulled at 19:40. But the Killer Bees were able to hang on to defeat the Mudbugs for the first time in five meetings over the last two seasons.
