Scorpions need wins as season winds down

SCORPIONS RECAP –

SCORPIONS 3, COLORADO 1 – Alexandre Piche scored on a great individual effort with 4:30 remaining in the third period to break a 1-1 tie and lift the Scorpions to a 3-1 victory over the Eagles in the first of back-to-back games Friday night. Fraser Filipic put Colorado on the board with 21.9 seconds left in the first period, but Shawn Legault tied it with his 20th goal of the season in the second period. Randy Murphy added a power play empty-net goal in the final minute. Murphy added an assist while Ladislav Kouba chipped in two helpers. Miguel Beaudry made 35 saves.

COLORADO 3, SCORPIONS 2 – The Scorpions erased a 2-0 deficit but Colorado came away with the 3-2 win on Saturday. Ladislav Kouba got the Scorpions on the board with 12.4 seconds left in the second period before Randy Murphy tied it seven minutes into the third, both on power play goals. Ryan Tobler scored on a rebound less than two minutes later for the eventual game-winner.

LUBBOCK 4, SCORPIONS 1 – The Cotton Kings jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period and never trailed in taking a 4-1 win over the Scorpions on Sunday. Alexandre Piche scored with 3:19 left in the second period to get the Scorpions back within a goal. Randy Murphy hit the crossbar in the final minute of the second and the Scorps were never able to get back even, as Lubbock scored twice in the final 2:05 of the game to seal the victory. Miguel Beaudry stopped 36 shots for the Scorpions.

SCORPIONS MATCH-UPS –

AMARILLO – The Scorpions are 3-2-1 against the Gorillas this season with the outcome of the season series hanging in the balance tomorrow. Amarillo has won three straight games and has a one-point edge over San Angelo for first place in the Southern Conference. Derek Hahn is tied for fifth in the CHL with 70 points (23g-47a), but Scott Wray was the CHL Player of the Month for February and has scored in six straight games, while Hahn has a point in eight in a row. Shawn Degagne is tied for fifth with 23 wins and is seventh with a 2.55 GAA.

COLORADO – After a split of two thrilling games last weekend at Tingley Coliseum, the teams close out the season series with another back-to-back set, this time in Colorado. The Eagles need a win on Wednesday against Amarillo or a Laredo win at Wichita tonight to clinch the Northwest Division championship for the second straight season. Greg Pankewicz is fourth in the CHL with 81 points (32g-49a) but has not played since getting hurt late in Friday's game against the Scorps. Riley Nelson is eighth with 67 points (30g-37a). Colorado is first in the league scoring 3.72 goals per game and allowing two per outing. Goalie Tyler Weiman leads the loop with 30 wins and a 1.76 GAA.

BEST OF THE BEST ANNOUNCED – The CHL's annual Best of the Best poll was unveiled yesterday, and the Scorpions factored into several different categories that were voted on by CHL players, coaches and broadcasters. Shawn Legault was named the league's Best Fighter and came in third for Best Power Forward, while Randy Murphy placed third under Best Skater. Tingley Coliseum was named Best Arena Concessions while the Marriott Uptown won for Best Host Hotel.

STINGERS – By picking up a goal and an assist on Friday, Randy Murphy has moved into sole possession of second place on the Scorpions all-time scoring list, passing Sylvain Naud... Murphy now has 244 points in less than three seasons with the team... Alexandre Piche has three goals in his last four games and 11 in his last ten contests... Miguel Beaudry is close to being the league's ironman goalie... Beaudry has appeared in 49 games for the Scorpions this season, just one behind San Angelo's Scott Reid... Konrad McKay became a father for the first time over the weekend, as son Carter was born back home in Manitoba on Saturday, checking in at about eight pounds.

REGULAR SEASON HOME FINALE TOMORROW – Don't miss tomorrow's regular season home finale as the Scorpions host archrival Amarillo in a pivotal game. Faceoff is 7:05 p.m., and it's Dodge Rally Towel Night to the first 1,500 fans.

TICKET AND TEAM STORE INFO – Tickets for all Scorpions home games start at $11 and can be purchased at the Scorpions Team Store, 6300 San Mateo NE in the Far North Shopping Center, at the Tingley Coliseum box office beginning two hours prior to game time, or at any TicketMaster outlet. Regular non game-day hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. On Tuesday through Friday game days it is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday game days from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
