RIO GRANDE VALLEY KILLER BEES
2004-05 WEEKLY RELEASE
FOR THE WEEK OF Mar 7th - Mar 13th
ROADSHOWS COME TO A CLOSE
The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees have spent five of the last six weeks (since January 24th) on the road with multi-overnight stays around the CHL in those weeks, including 12 of the last 18 days on the road, but now the Bees have five of their final six games at home with the only road trip remaining consisting of a day-trip to Corpus Christi (3/17). Just because the Bees are home does not mean they get an ample time to gain any rest. Tuesday the Bees open a three game homestand by hosting the Odessa Jackalopes, which also closes out a busy four games in five nights span that saw the Bees travel over 1,000 miles to kickoff the span in Memphis last Friday. The Bees will follow Tuesday's game with a pair of divisional match-ups as they host the Austin Ice Bats on Friday and the Corpus Christi Rayz Saturday. The Bees remaining five games are all against teams that are in playoff contention.
THE BEE IS STILL THE BEST OF THE BEST
The Central Hockey League announced its results from the 2004/2005 Best of the Best Poll Sunday and the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees found themselves among two categories. For a second consecutive season, the Killer Bees were honored as having the Best Logo in the CHL. The logo was designed by GLS Graphics out of Lubbock, Texas, and it beat out the Laredo Bucks logo. Ryan Shmyr received the Bees lone individual honor, as he ranked as the third "Best Fighter" and ranking as the best in the Southern Conference. The annual poll is conducted by CHL head coaches, players, and PR/broadcasting directors, and lists the top three results of 38 voting categories. The categories focus on everything from player abilities to best league facilities and even best fans. The ballots were collected and tabulated by Roy Lang of the Shreveport Times.
THIS WEEK'S "INSIDE THE NUMBERS"
11-18-2 - Record- The Bees are one of only two teams (Topeka) in the CHL that has a losing record when out-shooting their opponents. The Bees have out-shot their opponents in five consecutive games.
85-45 - Shots on Goal - The Bees out-shot the Memphis RiverKings 45-20 on Friday night and 40-25 Saturday night to combine for a 85-45 shots on goal advantage in the two games. Unfortunately, the Bees lost by a combined total of 11-5, losing 6-2 on Friday and 5-3 on Saturday.
220:55 - Shutout Sequence - Troy Linna's goal Sunday in Bossier-Shreveport ended a span of 220-minutes and 55-seconds against the Mudbugs which they had not scored a goal against them.
BEE OF THE WEEK
This week's Killer Bees "Bee of the Week," for their performance in last week's games is issued for a second consecutive time to forward Joe Guenther. The "G-UENiT," who tallied five goals in the Bees three games over the previous week, had an assist Friday and a pair of goals Saturday (both games in Memphis) to co-lead the Bees in scoring for the week with 3 points. Guenther's pair of goals on Saturday placed him as the team's leader with 20 goals. The Buffalo native was unable to gain a point Sunday in Bossier City, ending a five-game point streak.
HIGH NOTES
With the regular season coming to a close on March 19th, we take a look at some of the individual accomplishments that some of the Bees have strived towards and are currently aiming towards: Joe Guenther has notched a career high in goals (20)... Darcy Smith has a career high in points (10)... Jason Hawes is having a career best season with 9 goals and 19 assists for 28 points... Bill Newson is two points away from a second consecutive 50-point season... Ryan Shmyr is 16 penalty minutes away from 262 penalty minutes, which would be a Bees single season high.
