Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
Corpus Christi, TX - In the first of three straight games between the Corpus Christi Rayz and Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs, it was the Bugs who took round one with a 4-1 win Thursday Night at the American Bank Center. The streaking Mudbugs rode a three goal first period, and an outstanding 35 save effort from goaltender Ken Carroll to a 4-1 victory. The teams will remain in Corpus Christi and face-off in the rematch on Friday night.
The Mudbugs got on the board at 6:09 of the first period when Shane Palahicky beat Brent Zelenewich on a rebound for the first goal of the game. The Mudbugs made it 2-0 at 13:39 when Dan Wildfong tipped a shot from the point through the legs of Zelenewich. The Rayz got on the board at 16:46 as Tim Vitek scored his third goal of the season with a tally from between the circles. The goal appeared to give the Rayz some momentum, however just 1:08 later, the Bugs made it 3-1 when Chris Brassard scored to recapture the Bugs two-goal lead. The Mudbugs outshot the Rayz 15-12.
In the second period, the Mudbugs got the only goal of the stanza in the final seconds. With just 12.3 left on the clock, Jason Campbell buried a rebound chance to give the Bugs a three-goal lead. Ryan Manitowich clanked a shot off the post and the rebound lingered in bottom of the slot as Campbell pounced on the loose puck to make the score 4-1. The Rayz got several chances on net and pressured Mudbugs netminder Ken Carroll, but could not find the back of the net. The Rayz outshot the Bugs 12-10.
Neither team tallied in the third as both squads put 12 shots on net. The loss was the sixth consecutive for the Rayz, whose record dropped to 15-24-2. Zelenewich took the loss, making 33 saves on 37 shots. His record fell to 6-12-1. Carroll won his fifth straight, improving his season mark to 13-7-4. Corpus Christi is now 11 points behind Austin and Rio Grande Valley tied for the final playoff spots in the Southern Conference. The Mudbugs won their sixth game in their last seven contests, and now have points in 10 of 11. The Bugs have won the last four meetings with the Rayz in Corpus Christi. The Rayz went 0-5 on the power play, while the Bugs went 1-5. The Bugs record improved to 21-13-5, and they extended their first place lead in the Northeast Division to 13 points over second place.
The Rayz and Mudbugs will square off on Friday night in a rematch at the American Bank Center. It's a Pre-Super Bowl Party on Harley Davison Men's Night, presented by Time Warner and Classic Rock 104.5FM. In a football themed event, the Rayz will give away tickets to Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans 2006 games tomorrow night. Fans can also get a discount at the door by wearing Seattle Seahawks or Pittsburgh Steelers gear at the game. Guys 18 and older can get discounted vouchers at CC Harley Davidson.
