Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release

ALLEN, TX - David Rutherford scored twice as the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs handed the Allen Americans their first defeat of the season Saturday night at the Allen Events Center, building a 4-1 lead on their way to a 6-3 victory.

The Mudbugs improve to 5-2-0 this season and tie Allen (5-1-0) for first place in the Berry Conference.

Five players recorded multiple points for Bossier-Shreveport, led by Justin Aikins with a goal and two assists. Jeff Martens and Shawn Limpright each scored and added an assist while Simon Mangos finished with two helpers in the victory.

Brian Foster stopped 34 shots in his second straight start on his way to improving to 2-0.

Allen took a 1-0 lead just over three minutes into the contest as Nino Musitelli's shot right off a faceoff found the top corner through traffic.

Mitch Love fought Liam Huculak a short time later and then Shawn Limpright answered for the Mudbugs, tying the game when he knocked in the rebound of a long shot by Simon Mangos for his second goal of the season.

The 'Bugs then took the lead when Justin Aikins and Jeff Martens executed a nice give-and-go play ending with Aikins backhanding the puck over Chris Whitley's shoulder to make it 2-1 after 20 minutes.

David Rutherford extended the lead early in the second period, one-timing Limpright's pass by Whitley at 1:56.

Rutherford struck again three minutes later, re-directing a Jim Jorgensen's shot from the point to make the lead 4-1 for the 'Bugs and chase Chris Whitley from the net.

Adrien LeMay took over in goal for Allen, who drew closer late in the period on a goal from Jarret Lukin that made it 4-2 after 40 minutes.

Dave Bonk jammed in a second chance at 4:04 of the third to get the Americans within one at 4-3.

Later in the period though, Jeff Martens beat LeMay with a pinpoint shot from a sharp angle to regain the Mudbugs' two-goal cushion on the powerplay.

After Steven Crampton received a five-minute major penalty for slashing, Allen had a 6-on-4 powerplay with the net empty when Travis Clayton scored a shorthanded empty to seal the 6-3 win.

Bossier-Shreveport finished 2 for 3 on the powerplay while holding Allen scoreless on five chances.

Chris Whitley took the loss after giving up four goals on 14 shots, while LeMay made 11 saves over 33 minutes in goal.

The Americans won the shot count by a final tally of 37-27.

The Mudbugs will return home to take on the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees Thursday at the CenturyTel Center.

Opening faceoff is set for 6:35 pm as the Mudbugs honor longtime goaltender Ken Carroll and celebrate our 10th anniversary at the CenturyTel Center.
