NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, TX - Travis Clayton scored with less than a minute remaining in regulation and Mark Johnson notched the shootout winning goal as the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs came from behind to top the Texas Brahmas 4-3 Wednesday night at the NyTex Sports Centre. The 'Bugs improve to 16-11-1 after completing their fifth third-period comeback of the season.
Trailing 3-1 in the third period, Jeff Kyrzakos and Clayton scored to tie the game up before Ken Carroll stopped four of five Brahmas in the shootout to set the stage for Johnson's winner. Justin Aikins scored the other goal for Bossier-Shreveport, who outshot Texas 25-3 during the third period and overtime. Carroll stopped 29 shots to earn his seventh win of the year. The win was also Clayton's 800th career game.
The 'Bugs struck first in the game when Justin Aikins picked up the rebound of a Simon Mangos shot and tucked it past goaltender Joe Palmer to give the Mudbugs a 1-0 lead at 6:16. Texas tied it later in the first period a with a powerplay goal as James Hiebert chipped a rebound chance over Carroll's shoulder to make it a 1-1 game after 20 minutes.
Texas then took the lead in the second period with two special teams goals just over two minutes apart. The first goal happened on the powerplay at 8:12 when Nathan Perrot tipped a long Jordan Cameron shot into Carroll's five-hole to put the Brahmas on top. They extended the lead to 3-1 on another deflection as Ross Rouleau's shot from the point was going wide when Cameron redirected it into the net at 10:23. Texas took the two-goal advantage into the locker room after outshooting the Mudbugs 18-5 during the second frame.
The 'Bugs roared back in the third period though, outshooting the Brahmas 18-3 and scoring twice to tie it. Kyrzakos sent a shot over Palmer's right shoulder and into the net during a 5-on-3 Mudbugs powerplay to cut the lead to 3-2 at 12:48. Then with Carroll on the bench for the extra attacker, Clayton's quick wrist shot beat Palmer to the glove side with only 49.8 seconds remaining to force overtime for Bossier-Shreveport.
After a scoreless OT in which the 'Bugs held a 7-0 shot edge, Shawn Limpright was the first player to score in the shootout. Cameron answered to tie it for Texas before Johnson converted as the last shooter in the fifth round to clinch the 4-3 win.
Joe Palmer made 35 saves in the shootout loss as the Mudbugs outshot the Brahmas 39-32 in all. The 'Bugs finished 1 for 6 on the powerplay while Texas converted 2 of 6 chances.
