Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release
Rochester, NY - In Thursday's series finale, pitching took center stage as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees (29-23) and the Toledo Mud Hens were scoreless through six innings. However, Eric Patterson sparked the Toledo offense with a two-RBI double in the top half of the seventh leading the Mud Hens to a 3-0 lead over the Yankees.
Toledo struck first as they loaded the bases with nobody out in the top half of the seventh inning. Matt Young led off the inning with a single, Brad Eldred followed with a double and Ryan Strieby drew a walk, loading the bases with nobody out in the inning. Eric Patterson then roped a two-RBI single to left-centerfield. Jason Bulger then came in to relieve D.J. Mitchell as the Mud Hens still had nobody out, and runners on the corner. Bulger kept the damage minimal as he allowed just one run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Bryan Holaday giving the Mud Hens a 3-0 lead.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's best chance to score came in the bottom half of the seventh. The Yankees had bases loaded with one out in the inning, but Colin Curtis popped out to shallow left field and Mustelier was thrown out at home after trying to tag from third. The Yankees were shutout for just the sixth time this season.
D.J. Mitchell suffered the loss for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre falling to 4-2 on the year. He was dominant early in the game as he pitched six innings of shutout ball before allowing three runs in the seventh. He allowed three runs on five hits, while striking out seven and walking just one.
Rob Waite earned the win for the Mud Hens in relief of starter Brooks Brown. Waite tossed 2.1 innings of scoreless baseball allowing three hits, while striking out two and walking one. Brown shutout the Yankees in four innings on the bump, allowing three hits, while striking out three and walking two. Chris Bootcheck earned his 10th save of the season for the Mud Hens. He walked the first two batters of the inning, but then struck out the side to end the game.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre now travels to Norfolk, Virginia to begin a six game four-day series on Friday night at Harbor Park against the Tides. Right-hander Ramon Ortiz (3-3, 3.35) gets the nod in game one, while Mike O'Connor (1-1, 2.97) takes the hill in the second half of the twin bill. Steve Johnson (1-3, 2.62) takes the bump in game one for the Tides and Jason Berken (0-1, 2.12) gets the ball in game two.
