Vermont Mountaineers News Release

The Vermont Mountaineers won their third straight game on Monday night, as they topped the Sanford Mainers 16-5 in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action.

The Mountaineers put on a show offensively on a special night, as former MLB players Jim Kaat, who is a three-time All-Star and former World Series champion, and Rob Delaney, who was the first Mountaineer to ever play in the big leagues, were in the house.

Vermont scored three runs in the first, second, third, and fifth innings respectively, and then a pair in the fourth and then another two in the sixth to pick up the win. Jon Stiever (Cedarburg, Wis./Indiana) started for Vermont, going six innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits. Stiever walked one and struck out six.

Keegan Meyn (Oklahoma City, Okla./Arkansas Little Rock), who has been white hot lately for the Mountaineers, started the offense off with a three-run double to right-center field, driving in Will Morgan (Middletown, N.J./Old Dominion), Mike Osinski (Vestal, N.Y./Longwood), and Mikael Mogues (New York, N.Y./Seton Hall).

In the second inning, the Mountaineers added three more thanks to a sac fly off the bat of Mogues, an RBI single by Joe Tietjen (Waxhaw, N.C./UNC Asheville), and a passed ball, on which Trevor Ezell (Alexander, Ark./Southeast Missouri) scored.

Vermont stayed hot in the third when Will Morgan scored on Keegan Meyn's sacrifice, and Daniel Little (Nicholasville, Ky./Louisville) ripped a two-run single.

From there, it was more the same offensively for the 'Neers. They totaled 15 total hits in the contest, and capitalized on five Sanford errors.

The Mainers got on the board first in the game, when they scored three runs in the top of the first inning. Zach Jancarski (East Norriton, Pa./Maryland) got them started when he lead off the game with a double, and later scored on an error by Vermont's pitcher. Todd Czinege (Overland Park, KS/Villanova) then ripped an RBI single, driving in Jordan Powell (Kingwood, Texas/Rhode Island). Tristan Chari (Nashville, Tenn./Vanderbilt) capped the scoring in the frame with an RBI double, scoring Czinege from first.

Cole Whitney (Campbell Hall, N.Y./St. John's) suffered the loss for the Mainers after going just two innings, and getting knocked around for six runs on four hits. The righty walked two and struck out three batters.

Stiever got the win for the Mountaineers, improving his record to 1-1 on the season. Reliever Christian Isbell (Scottsdale, Ariz./Arizona St.) got the save for Vermont, after pitching three innings, allowing no earned runs on two hits.

The Mountaineers will be back in action on Tuesday night, when they'll take on the Mystic Schooners for the second time this season. First pitch is set for 6:30 PM at Montpelier Recreation Field. The game can be heard on CBS Sports 1240 AM WSKI or online through The NECBL Broadcast Network.
